49's Gear Guide (best practice) + Rares to farm

**Starting The Maw denies you access to Chromie Time, possibly forever (until they fix the Bug), so grab any Gear you might want from past XPacs via Chromie Time 1st**​

First thing you MUST to do after getting through The Maw and into Oribos is continue on with the Storyline that sends you to Bastion. That entire Aspriants section (SE corner of the Zone) gives iLvL 88-110 Gear, higher than you'll get once you're on the Threads of Fate Campaign. I cannot stress this enough, you absolutely cannot take the Quest for Threads of Fate until you've finished every Quest possible in Bastion as part of the main Story.

Completing Bastion will net you nearly full iLvL 88/90 gear, but you'll be missing a few slots. These can be taken up with normal Questing throughout the 4 Zones while on Threads of Fate (iLvL 84 Greens base), Treasures and Rares. The Rares are repeatable daily, for the most part. You WILL get Loot each day, but not always the Gear the Rare drops, after the 1st kill. Certain Rares drop their Gear every single day, others drop it daily but only for certain Classes (because reasons) and further Rares just don't seem to want to drop Gear past the 1st kill.

This Thread will be mostly about the Rares since that's the only way to potentially get multiple pieces of 104/110 Epics. As of this writing, no Gear drops with Sockets/Tertiary via Quests/Treasures/Rares. BoE Greens/Blues DO have the chance of dropping with at least a Socket, but that's of no use to 49's as all BoE Greens are Character Level 50+. Also, while 49's CAN Que for Dungeons, and the Gear DOES say Level 48+, we cannot actually get into the Dungeon even when the Group forms, it fails to port you inside. This means no access to that sweet iLvL 88 Gear. Hopefully Blizz fixes that also.

Lastly, I won't get into whether HoA + Azerite Gear will be superior to SL Gear in this Thread. There's far too many different options and Specs that benefit differently from Azerite Traits. There's also a possibility that iLvL 60 Neck/Trinket from Legion BoE Epics will outperform SL Gear if they have a Socket/Tertiary, since the Neck can be Enchanted and the proc from Six-Feather Fan is quite valuable.

If a Rare isn't shown below it's either because Wowhead has no listing for that Rare or it's Loot (undiscovered) or it's Character Level is 60+, meaning no Loot for 49's.​

There are also a fair bit of decent Gearing options from Treasures but they're a one-and-done type of situation and some drop scaled to 49, others have fixed Character Levels starting around LvL 53 and up to 60. Also, HoA + Azerite gear is likely BiS for those pcs regardless of being lower iLvL than SL gear. If anyone finds things I missed please reply and I'll add them, thanks.

EDIT: Chromie Time Quest rewards are iLvL 58 Green/Blue/Purple and iLvL 57 for Dungeon Blues.

EDIT2: Blizzard stealth changed the Tool Tip for Reputation purchased Gear to 48 from the various Levels they all used to be. That opens up a potentially huge amount of very high iLvL Gear (with a massive PITA grind of daily WQ). I will post more about it as it's confirmed.

Added color coding to which Rares are Farmable daily or not.

 

I've been farming it since I found out about it, your picture just proves that the Chest DOES drop at least at 50, although that 3 charge Use is terrible.

Has anyone seen any BoE Blue "World drops" that scale to 49 yet? I have no idea if there even is any, just curious.

 

@Warglave I've had that Glaive loot on 4 diff 49's, all gave diff Character Levels from 53 to 60.

So here's an interesting thing. I've been gearing a 49 Shammy in TBC (Dungeons + weird Quest drops) and finding that at iLvL ~52, I already have almost as much Main Stat as my iLvL 89 Hunter in full SL gear. I'm doing this because of the stupid Chromie Time bug and to see what I can achieve without SL gear. Sure, I have loads less HP than a SL 49 but my DPS is close to on par with a fully geared SL 49. And I'm not anywhere close to BiS, I don't have a single piece actually, just a few close-enough with 3x Sockets and +7 Mastery in every Socket.

 

Indeed, that will be my next thing to work on after I'm happy enough with her gear from Chromie Time (Sockets-a-plenty). As for DPS, I'm pushing a sustained ~650 ST and burst just over 1000. My 49 Hunter at iLvL 89 has sustained ~850 DPS and burst around 1100, so it's oddly close for being -30 iLvLs. Health wise my Shammy is about 2600 HP lower. Secondaries are reasonable also, but obviously lower than full SL gear.

 

I have the same issue on a few Quests, have Bug reported them so hopefully Blizz fixes it but I don't have high hopes.

So I've been doing a bunch of Dungeons with a few of my 49's, one of which is very well SL geared (DPS) and I gotta admit I'm not at all impressed. This is in comparison to my 10's, my 30 and 39. Now my 49 Hunter is usually #1 DPS on Bosses but sucks in AOE and even at #1 ST his DPS is only ~1200. Compare that to my 10 Hunter (which is near BiS) and his ST DPS was pushing 3.5K on a 44's Skada without Lust/Buffs.

While I don't regret taking my old 101's to 49, I'm also no longer as excited now that I have several of them fully SL geared.

 

Found another Rare that drops up to Epic 104 at 49, Faeflayer in Ardenweald. This one is a Str 1H. OP has been updated.

 

@monstertank I might have found a Stam Trinket for your 49 DH. Reliquary of the Damned if you can get the iLvL 60 variant has 24 Stam, then get it with Socket+Leech and it'd be a decent Trinket. The Shield looks like it'd be ~25% of your HP once you get to ~20K and at iLvL 50+ you can toss a BfA 7 Versa Gem in it for example.. I'm not gonna say it would outperform a SL Trinket but you did ask for Stam.

 

This is how bad my luck is on my 49 DH getting the Ring and Trinket from Ardenweald. Including the Blues he's wearing, that's 16 days in a row with no Epic.
