EU+US My Favorite Rapper

Art can be anything and is subjective. A famous painter once put his signature on a toilet and it sold for an obscene amount. I like rap, but I still think it is an inferior musical genre in comparison to others.
Yeah, that is subjective as well. The closest you can get to objectivity in this case is record sales/downloades and this genre has done exceedingly well with that.

So skill-level is subjective? Who's doing the most difficult thing? I guess what is difficult to some is easy to others so any arguments on this website about skill should be ignored because it's only subjective.

Yup, motzart would have been a terrible rapper but it is apparent that he was able to do amazing things from a young age, I would be surprised if Eminem or say biggy could play a single instrument.

I'd say the majority of don't instantly become an amazing rapper.

I can't rap at all, I can write well, but I can't even rap along with songs I know the words to.

My parents can't even understand a song from a fast rapper such as tech9...their ears are not a use to it

I think you are underestimating how difficult keeping flow can be

Not even a little bit. I'm speaking from the perspective of someone who has composed beats, wrote rhymes, arranged bars and has been in the studio (more like a room with a booth full of styrofoam and a mic) with several talented wordsmiths as well as more than several not-so-talented wordsmiths. The opinions I put out here are based in hands-on experience.

I'm saying that playing an instrument takes more skill than what eminem did on g.o.a.t. or anything immortal technique did. Wasn't making fun of poor people or anything...the first 10-12 years of my life were spent living in poverty. I understand that creating a message and getting it across while also being limited to what you can say next because every syllable counts when you only have 8 bars or less and most things need to rhyme. Rhyming is not 10% lol. If you disagree, what's the other 90%? I don't see how quoting Hopsin is laughable. I've literally only heard two of his songs, but dude showed more skill than the security guard Rick Ross or all of the auto-tune artists of today. Oh yeah, it's only for edgy suburban white kids.....lol that statement was the equivalent of some back-woods redneck saying something is only for hippies.

okay we can give rhyming maybe 20% 10% was a little low, also i used to like hopsin but his last noticable piece of work was raw, his past 2 albums have been dreadful, if you compare to him to someone like rick ross of course you can say he is good. Also i dont know where you think hiphop is right now but there is a lot good rap music out right now of course we will never have biggy's and pac's but people like logic, asap rocky, school boy q kendrick lamar joey badass, childish gambino, flatbush zombies, tech n9ne, mac miller. To name a few are some of the modern rappers i listen too once you take the biased blindfold off and learn to appreciated music in the waves it comes in you will be okay :)

I agree and I never said there wasn't. I said that hip-hop artists have less skill than musicians that have mastered playing an instrument or multiple instruments. The rappers that can play instruments.....I wish I could name a few. The roots come to mind as a great hip-hop band that actually plays instruments instead of rapping over electronically composed beats.

I think hip-hop is where it's been for a few decades now. It's all about promoting narcissism or promoting prison-mentality. The stuff with a positive message or productive message is usually undeground and not as popular. Getting kids to think that being a drug dealer/pimp/gangster is cool so that they can start building up that rap-sheet at a young age that way, when they reach adult age they couldn't get their life back on track if they wanted to. They wind up dead, incarcerated, or homeless with their brain fried from drug use. The others wind up dedicating their lives to being a consumer, obsessed with materialism, vanity and social status. All of these things are great for the people making money off of it (it's not the artists by the way)

I'm fine dude. I'm not blindfolded or biased. I've dabbled with several different forms of music and play multiple instruments and even though I like some rap, I think that I'm knowledgeable enough to say that it's not something that takes as much skill. Don't even get me started on mainstream, insecure complaint rock though...

For serious business, this has already been dubbed battle of the year;

And this is already the best rapper ever (Eyedea, though Slug is my favorite rapper);

I agree with some of the points you've made in this thread, but I think this sort of product (because that's what it is: a monetized product, not art) crosses the boundaries of genre. It is not exclusive to hip hop. There will always be artists who are uncompromising, innovative and non-conformist but they will never or very rarely have the money behind them and will remain on the outskirts of popular culture. I know for myself artists like Dead Prez and Mos Def fall into this category, while an "artist" like Nickleback is akin to the generic garbage that the music industry vomits out and sells to the masses in any given genre.

I think you're taking a different approach in judging a MC/rapper's ability than I would. A rapper is not like a singer, rapping itself does not require much skill, but it is about the writing, not the rapping. It is not something you should compare to musical skill, but to writing skill. Comparisons with other authors or poets would be a better comparison, in my opinion.

But most well-written rap stays underground which is not really a problem, theyt get by from rapping, they don't need millions of dollars or millions of fans. Only the dance/pop rap reaches the charts and that rap is absolutely garbage on both instrumental and written level. But yeah, it's not like it's a bad thing that a lot of underground rap stays underground. If people want to hear it, they'll find it anyway.

Also covers of rap songs is fucking stupid.

heres my favorite rap

Lowkey though Alex I listened to this entire song. That shit is nice as fuck
