As someone who preferred Dominion instead of Summoner's Rift in LoL (more fights/skirmishes, less/no automatable last-hitting/farming for 5+ minutes at the start, among other reasons), I like Heroes of the Storm, especially the idea of no item shops (with that somewhat covered by talents while leveling) and shared experienced (instead of a single player snowballing a win, teams snowball). To me the primary plus to item building is the idea of counter-building (especially to mitigate or address a advantage your opponents have gained, and lessen their ability to snowball), though one could do similar with talents (well, sometimes).
LoL and other MOBAs are good and fine (in my humble opinion), though (among other problems), I do not like the meta requiring someone to starve themselves of gold/etc. to redistribute those to their carry/ies (which to me was why most LoL/etc. players in solo queue for summoner's rift ASAP call for top or mid lane, the more profitable lanes). Even if premading with friends, I did not like putting them in that position, nor did I find that a "fun" position to play. Insisting someone play a initiator, healer, or specialist (instead of assassin or other DPS when there's more than enough) is one thing, but insisting you or they starve yourself or themselves for your team (or for yourself, especially) is another.
Overall I like the game but I can only play it a few hours a week or get becomes too repetitive for me.
Well, repetitivity is a problem for most (or almost all) games, isn't it? Nonetheless, I agree there could be more distinct objectives outside pushing lanes/killing cores, or securing secondary objectives to win the primary objective.
