Brand New Classic Player - Coming over from 20's Retail - LF "Getting Started" Guidance!

Hi!

I've been twinking on retail for about 4 months now and have been loving it. I've played WoW super super super casually off-and-on since Cata, and twinking is the only thing that's managed to capture my attention/interest for more than a few weeks at a time...

Classic WoW is not something I've really experienced.

I've heard recommendations from others in the twinking community on retail to really consider trying out Classic 19's twinking, but I have no idea where to start.

I'm wondering if there are others on this forum who have experience playing both. How would you compare the two? What should I expect, coming over from 20's retail? Is it about as active? Or is it a much smaller community? What's better/more fun about Classic twinking? What's worse/less fun?

I'm also in desperate need of newbie guides, tutorials, and other info to start wrapping my head around it. Are there any streamers who I should watch for commentary?

Lastly, just to get things started, what would you all recommend for a US Realm? Alliance or Horde? Best classes/specs? Active, friendly guilds? I see a lot of threads with the EU tag...Is EU more active than NA?

Hi Henry! Thank you for your interest : )

Queue in classic pop frequently, most times of the day it isn't longer than a 5 minute Q with 4-10 games running at a time.

There are some big differences between retail 20s and Classic 19s. With Classic 19s you can rely on things remaining very close to the way things are, Blizzard isn't really allowed to make big changes, that means it should still be fun and active 2 years from now!!

To twink at 19 in Classic wow requires a lot of specific gear for your class, and depending on your server that gear will either be VERY expensive or slowish to come to market. No matter how you slice it you're looking at spending 1-2k gold on a really good twink, before consumables. And that brings us to the next big change: consumables!! Classic has speed potions, bombs, rocket boots, discombobulation, elixirs, bandages, and more! Using them will cost you a certain amount each time, you don't need them, but they can certainly give you an edge.

Buffs are also something to consider, in retail you don't need to worry about them in the same way, either you get them in the game or you skip them that game. In classic try hards may want to get Dragon and Heart world buffs, which provide a LOT of power for 2 hours, unless you die sooner. You also can get buffs 1 rank above your level, so you could find yourself in town running around asking for that +260 HP priest buff while in Q or even wanting a 2nd account so you can buff your own characters with all the various buffs different classes give.

I forget if crazy jumps are a thing in retail, but they sure are here, expect to have a learning curve as you learn the jumps so you can follow the enemy flag carrier through some wild jumps just to keep on his tail and put him down : P


Overall if you have the time to really invest in it 19 twinks can be a very rewarding experience : )

As for region, play your default region, they all seem active. Pick a class you'll enjoy, most all are viable! There is a guild directory, contact some people on battle.net find some you like the atmosphere for and build a character there

Mankrik is a good server for 19 twinks, Horde or Alliance. Welcome :)
 
Ill echo that mankirk is a solid server lots of 19th guilds. Comparitively it takes allot more effort to set up a 19 think in classic than a 20 in retail, but there is allot better competition both in available premades/pugmades and in solo que. There is allot to learn particularly with terrain but it isn't difficult. Don't get discouraged by the jumps and take time to practice them when you can and you will be fine.
