George Floyd Protest

To be fair they actually fell under multiple strikes passed 3 and were reported many times. Both of them have been banned before for things that are far beyond our tos. We allow for free speech obviously but some things are just detrimental to the sites health and user base.

ok but i can make a suggestion, when someone is banned and people are asking why? let them know cause it comes across like people are banned just cause admins don't like them sometimes.

That’s completely fair, although this may not have been the best place to allow transparency in the matter, both light and jwl are far from martyrs.

We've had discussions about making our warning/banning escalation system made more transparent and clear (and consistent) because, you're right, its really not right now.

But be assured. Bans are not arbitrary or at the whim of a single mod. They're discussed and quite often involve a lot of disagreement.

This. And also

You are always free to privately message a moderator to inquire about actions being taken on accounts.

yea, people dont really really understand that the rural north is every bit as fucked up and racist as the rural south.

btw the rural north is worse, visit my old college town of Plattsburgh, NY, you won't find any southern hospitality there from the locals.

I was there when it happened, sad...

Treating his death as a joke is really undermining the problem and disgusting. I thought this thread was going to be about real issues, but it’s just a picture for laughs. I assumed admins on the site would support the cause and deter this behavior but most are playing along with the pictures. Chops had some good points about the racial issues but other mods are just part of the problem. Sad to see xpoff in this mindset

Rest in Peace David Dorn.

Its a gross and disgusting post and is intentionally provocative. And when it floundered and fell flat on its initial posting, I was glad to see it didnt pick up steam. So it also didnt feel necessary to respond to in a moderation capacity.

But now that all the usual smoothbrained dipshits have found it and think their cringey shitposting is edgy or that it makes them hard, that stance may change. We'll see where this goes.

Thank you if you take action on this post. If people don’t see anything wrong with what was originally posted they are part of the problem.

what happened to George Floyd is sadly normal when it comes to resisting arrest in the U.S. I believe it's related to the U.S. police training and education and has nothing to do with hatred against specific groups.

re-watch it and look if the cops are:

• struggling to get out the suspect from the car?

• struggling to put handcuffs on him?

• struggling to get him into the police vehicle?

To me he isn't complying and is what they call resisting arrest and it's american traditions to brutalize the suspect if they don't obey.

so if u struggle and then get handcuffed and are no longer a threat they get to kill you? is this what they teach you about the united states in europe? i really didn't think Europeans were so clueless about what goes on here in cities, rural areas, vacation towns, wooded areas, great plains, deserts, and in little meetings with people of similar interests, they are smart enough to know not to talk about it when they go to church on sunday, only when they meet in their field and light their cross.

Since you dont live in the US and very clearly arent a scholar of racism or US culture, let me try to explain this to you. Against my better judgement.

Racism isn't just a bunch of hooded assholes burning crosses in black peoples lawns. It's baked into Americas political, legal and social existence. Our constitution, for fucks sake, recognizes black people as only 3/5ths of a person. The vast, *vast* majority of our nations founders were slave holders. Racism is very much a part of America in more than just a "some racists live here" kind of way.

You gotta also get beyond "racism is one person explicitly hating another person for their skin color" and recognize that racism is better understood as a system set up to privilege one race over others by providing access to power for some, while using that power to deny advancement and privilege to others. Typically referred to as something like "institutionalized racism"

Racism in America looks like cities paving over black neighborhoods to build highways specifically designed to segregate cities (see I35 in Austin, TX or I630 in my city, Little Rock). It looks like redlining in home mortgage loans. It looks like electing the first black president and then him overseeing the greatest transfer of wealth *out* of poor black communities and into rich white hands since they burned Tulsa (feel free to google "tulsa race massacre").

There's a lot of glitter around more overt racial issues in America. The KKK, Neo Nazis, etc. But racism... the actual institutional racism that holds up the power structure that reinforces those assholes, its more subtle but no less deadly.

So when George Floyd was murdered, it was a product of that more subtle racism. Chauvin may or may not be overtly racist. I have no idea. But his training and the training of most cops is steeped in it, just like every aspect of American culture is.

Im running out of the desire to keep talking about it. But if you're curious, two very easy to understand books you could read on it are A Colony In A Nation by Chris Hayes (quite specific to this conversation) and We Were 8 Years In Power by Ta-Nehisi Coates (much more generalized examination of race/racism in america). I don't particularly agree with either of them 100% but theyre both pretty milquetoast, center of the road liberals so it's not like you'll have to wade through radical polemics.

Anyway, enjoy.

Blacks have been given every fishing rod and rope imaginable yet the crime rates in black communities are significantly higher than among other minorities. That's the reason for redlining and neighborhoods segregation. I don't doubt that (some) blacks face significant obstacles in their lives but so do other minorities and they do a much better job at overcoming said obstacles. There comes a time when you have to own up to your own mistakes and stop trying to blame slavery (that not even your grandfathers truly experienced) for every failure.

also holy shit the phrasing choice here.

Yea man, black people got and continue to get every rod and rope imaginable.

Blacks have been given every rope imaginable

yea u changed my mind, there isn't a group of white power in America infiltrating the police, judges, governors, senators, and even the president, everyone here is doing all they can to help the poor black community, its just that they are poor and use fake $20 bills so they must be exterminated, yea those poor minorities, why dont they just become CEO's and make money???
