In 2014, they were protesting about a decision made by Beijing that stipulates the candidates must be nominated by a Beijing-controlled nomination committee. Somewhat like 3 candidates would be nominated which would then be elected by the generla public. NO, it is definitely not 'anybody could run'. Do some fact check first or S T F U.

And sham democracy like these is way WORSE THAN no democracy at all as it is just a way to cover up true dictatorship by a fake election. There is no such a thing called "not a perfect system but its on its way and better than..". Democracy is not about having some kind of election. I. Starting from 2017, the selection of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region may be implemented by the method of universal suffrage.

II. When the selection of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is implemented by the method of universal suffrage:

(1) A broadly representative nominating committee shall be formed. The provisions for the number of members, composition and formation method of the nominating committee shall be made in accordance with the number of members, composition and formation method of the Election Committee for the Fourth Chief Executive.

(2) The nominating committee shall nominate two to three candidates for the office of Chief Executive in accordance with democratic procedures. Each candidate must have the endorsement of more than half of all the members of the nominating committee.

(3) All eligible electors of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have the right to vote in the election of the Chief Executive and elect one of the candidates for the office of Chief Executive in accordance with law.

(4) The Chief Executive-elect, after being selected through universal suffrage, will have to be appointed by the Central People's Government.

III. The specific method of universal suffrage for selecting the Chief Executive shall be prescribed in accordance with legal procedures through amending Annex I to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China: The Method for the Selection of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The bill on the amendments and the proposed amendments to such bill shall be introduced by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in accordance with the Hong Kong Basic Law and the provisions of this Decision. Such amendments shall obtain the endorsement of a two-thirds majority of all the members of the Legislative Council and the consent of the Chief Executive before being submitted to the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress for approval.

Very few countries in Asia are democratic to the extent of the west, and some countries like Singapore have said it's an alien concept to Asia and has developed its own system which is a mixture of democracy, meritocracy and authoritarianism and they are seeing some great results. Democracy is very much the US. The US loves exporting democracy, because the US is one of the most ruthless and paranoid countries to have ever existed. Back in the 1950s, americans were afraid of "communists in their midst" that were gonna overturn the government with foreign help. This might seem a bit crazy now but it was something they worried about.

Someone came up with a solution to the second part of that problem. You get rid of anything other than democracies then there is no foreign help thats gonna come to your rebels.

But dont kid yourself. Democracy is only accepted when the west thinks you voted right. Ask a country like Algeria what happens when you vote wrong.

Which part of the nomination committee that you don't understand. How is it not about pre-screening so that the candidates can be handpicked by Beijing? And in the hong kong case, we are not talking about anyone imposing democracy on them. It is the China dictators don't want the democracy DEMANDED BY THEM. You keep spreading disinformation on every post.

Nominating Comittee = Electoral College.

Its not prescreening its midwaythroughscreening. Beijing doesnt pick the candidates. They just wanted to make sure that no candidate that mentioned independence was allowed.

They can have democracy on Beijings terms, but Hong Kong keeps trying to go all in with a 2 and a 3 while Beijing has a flush.

If you're gonna make demands you gotta have leverage or realistic demands. Hong Kong has neither.

1 country 2 systems isnt something that the british invented in 1997. Its how China has been run for 2 millenia.

Oh honey, China has not had the same government for 2,000 years congruently. There are only one or two other countries that are have one continuous government longer than the United States. And both of those countries are insignificant in comparison.

Why would I boycott a company for doing what a company does best (make money)? In what world would a company chose to piss of a country with 1 Billion+ people for political gain when most Americans are borderline retarded and will have forgotten about it in a week? No one ACTUALLY cares about the shady shit China does, so long as they have a home and can put food on the table. And even then, it's really up to the people of China and HK to sort their own shit out. There's much more pressing issues to focus on than what's happening in fucking China. Sure, maybe decades down the line when their currency can actually compete against the dollar on the global stage we might wanna worry and spout some bullshit about 'democracy' (:LUL:) to give them some 'freedom'. Or maybe when their massive pollution starts to cause problems in our hemisphere of the globe. Until then, shutup and enjoy being in the wealthiest country on the planet. Because this shit doesn't last forever.

When did I mention anything about regime longevity? Sorry if thats how it came across, my point was simply that one country, many systems was how the Chinese ran a state a third of the size of North America 2000 years ago. It was their way of decentralizing before there was email and cars.
