Have I messed up my hunter?

So I’ve finally “finished” Leveling and gearing my hunter but I’ve been so busy trying to get the right gear and quests done etc before I hit 19 that I completely forgot about a pet.

I can tame a level 19 pet now but don’t I need to learn some abilities for it etc or will it already have them? I’m completely new to hunter so I have no idea. I read somewhere that you need to get your pet at 18 and level it with your own level


Any help is appreciated!
 
Do you not have a pet.... at all? At 19?

edit- Some abilities must be learned from taming certain pets. A few kills after the tame is all it takes, usually, then you can train that ability to yours when (if) it gets sufficient training points. Pet loyalty and level dictate how many points you have to train with. Not sure how many training points your pet even gets at 19 or if it has any at that level at all.

(regarding pet level, if you were to tame say a level 11 now you likely would not be able to get enough XP for it to get to 19 too before you level yourself out of the bracket. They have XP bars too... higher up it's about 1/2 a level per each pet level but I don't know about 19. Just killing XP too, they don't get credit for quests, so it might not be 1/2 to be honest.)

Yikes, I'm prepping my hunter to have the rake,boar and serpent. Atleast 2 19, (will cost me 50% of my xp at 19)


Think you can get maybe a https://classic.wowhead.com/npc=2071/moonstalker-matriarch from Darkshore, they are .1 Speed off The Rake. In same area you can tame ghost saber first then learn Claw 3 then teach to moonstalker matriarch. Then you can tame a pet with Bite Rank 3 and you can learn the ability after killing a few mobs with it. then teach it to your cat.

You can also possibly still tame a great goretusk LV 17 from redridge and have enough XP to 18.
 
No you're fine, you can level up any pet by killing 9 (or 10?) level lower mobs then you, they'll be gray to you and give you no xp, but they'll be green for your pet and they'll gain xp (at least it was like this on private servers) give it a try
 
I’ve tamed a level 19 serpent. What do I need to do next, can I not just use it as it is? still have most of the level 19 exp bar to use if needed
