I don't know about any other plate wearers in here, but I am having the hardest time getting those stupid boots from Hellfire Ramparts (Vazruden the Herald) to drop. I've probably leveled over ten levelers to 70+ since I've run with multiple groups taking them along with me while I try to get one of the last pieces of my nearly complete 59 Alliance twink. The group I had last night was actually cheering me on for the boots by the 10th run. No plate twink friends at 59 = no extra chances *expired mammoth meat*.

Has anyone else had insanely low drop rates (or insanely shitty luck) with Ironsole Clompers? I'm going to stay on the grind, but holy **** I hate these boots. No exaggeration I've probably run this place 60 times. I don't remember them ever being this annoying to get in the past. @jwl any insight or funny motivational comments/stories?

Since they decided to merge the Normal/Heroic loot tables, TBC gear farming has been an absolute train wreck.
(however, it also brought us more best-in-slot gear)

When farming for the boots, just make sure that your loot specialization is set to protection - This will make the drop probability 1/8, instead of 1/9 (which it'll be if set to arms, fury, or retribution)

Unless you're speed-ran by a higher level with legacy rules, then the odds are 1/24. (Or theoretically, less, if you have 3 other 59s with you)

Yes, it is miserable farming for these items, and it can be tedious when you're doing it alone. But if this farm is too much for the modern wave of 59s, you guys never would have lasted grinding out Dark Iron Rings or Fire Opals. Just gotta keep trying until you get em. I've geared all of my 59s in 1-2 days, it'll drop. Be sure to join the community groups, as there are often players looking for help

@jwl Thanks for the info. This is my first 59, never did 59s back in Vanilla if it was a thing-- only 19s, 29s, and 49s (70s was awesome too). I did my first BG yesterday and it was pretty savage. The spec protection tip is a good one for everyone to know. I always try to look at the loot table and see if the item is shared by multiple specs, and if so which spec has the least amount of items dropping in it.

Unrelated, but: I noticed your prot paladin is using Wraith Scythe on the armory. Is it still BiS for us with the nerf? Want to know if I should farm that as well.

Could you explain this more or point me to where this is mentioned or found out? Having resubscribed after BFA launched this new lot method threw me for a loop.

@Knightfall Its all personal preference.
As a tank, I prefer it, as its just another source of healing. I think WS/Skullflame really set the durable tanks apart from the rest. Its just a really overpowered combination, and makes speed runs so much easier.

Sure.

Are you farmiliar with random dungeon / battleground crates?

Say you are playing an enhancement shaman, and your loot spec is set to enhance, you'll have a possibility of looting an agility ring, agility neck, or agility weapons in those crates.
Say you're still playing enhancement, but set the loot spec to elemental, you'll have a possibility of looting an intellect ring, intellect neck, or intellect weapon/shield in those crates.

Here is another example.

You're playing an arms warrior, but you want this cool shield for transmog.

The boss drops 3 items total.

1 being a plate helmet
1 being a 2 hand axe
1 being the shield you are after.

As an arms warrior, you naturally, dont use shields. So they wont drop for you when your loot spec is set to arms.

As an arms warrior, the following items will drop for you:
Plate helmet
2 hand axe

BUT, if you set your loot spec to prot warrior, you'll be able to loot that shield. Making the following items drop:
Plate helmet
Shield.

Hope this clears things up?

@Balroy The loot specialization part? If so I can explain that. Each spec has a set loot table of personal loot items they can receive. For certain specs, loot is shared (such as Ironsole Clompers in both Ret and Prot) given that the item can double as a tank or dps item. Some loots table pools might include less or more items in them, so when it comes to hunting for a specific RNG drop off a boss, you're always going to want to set your loot specialization to the smaller table with the item you want on it to increase your chances.

(typed during @jwl 's response so just posting here anyway even though he already answered)
[doublepost=1547039875,1547039735][/doublepost]@jwl Yeah I think I'm gonna try it out. I know in dungeons there is a lot of AoE so I can't really take it as a great measure of dps, but even on single target I feel as though prot hits like a truck and has consistent damage. I have a Skullflame Shield in my bank so I'm really considering using prot in BGs for the sustain (in theory) and the ranged interrupts from AS.

@Knightfall if you have a friend or a second account you can use a Demon Hunter with this method:
1. 59 stays at entrance
2. Straight to the right by the "damaged" part of the wall: DH does double jump in to vengeful retreat to skip directly to Vazruden.
3. DH kills Vazruden and loots chest
4. Both leave instance
5. Do this ten times, after which 10 correctly scaled items will be in 59's inbox.

Can be done pretty quick. You can also do this in Blood Furnace with a jump from the chain in the first room. You can fly through the walls and the 59 will get the loot after observing the kill through the window.

@totw NO WAY, are you serious!? That's busted lol! I want to try this. Been thinking of making a second account anyways. I'm assuming run-out-and-reset rules still apply?

@jwl and @Knightfall how does this work with shaman then with all/most mail gear being able to switch between agility and intelligence? Does it mean that there is little difference because the gear can switch stats?

Getting ran by a demon hunter is still a tedious farm. Like I said, legacy loot rules will make that 1/8 drop probability become a 1/24. Faster runs, but lower drop probability. Would only be worth it if you have 3 other 59s in the group, and if mailbox items can be traded.

Items that convert from agility, to intellect (IE chest, helmet, legs, bracer, etc...) are not affected in any way.

And when you've already done that 4-5 times and still no drop... it kind of eats at you. TBC sucks.

After I finally got them, I went to the nexus and farmed those 1 socket boots with crit and use those. LOLdodge.

You can literally see it for yourself in game. Go to the dungeon where wraith drops, go to the boss it drops off of, and see how many pieces can drop, then swap specs, and then see. You should see a change on some bosses because a 2 hander can’t drop for Prot and 1 hander can’t drop for ret.

Yes;

* Both run out and party leader resets instance.
* This is an alternative version of the jump I mentioned:
* Blood furnace skip 00 - 02min:
* Ten runs an hour because of instance reset limit.
* Make sure to confirm that 59 actually gets loot in inbox as this may vary depending on method and type of instance. Easiest way is to have a clean inbox and look for the mail icon as soon as you exit the instance.

1/24 probability times ten = 41.67% chance to obtain the boots. As @jwl points out it's only worth it if the instance allows fast runs. Ten Hellfire Ramparts runs can be done probably below 15 mins, maybe ten. But other dungeons are far slower, which becomes tedious and not worth it.

On the topic of being run by high level, a quick tidbit that might not be well-known... you only need the part of sul'thraze with the use effect on it to be equipable level to combine the two pieces. The other can be too high.

Not that it matters as much now, but just did it a few days ago with a max level second half that was traded to me.

edit- also... everyone agree that it's an unavoidable truth that the item you want will drop 4-5 times for the high-level that's running you before you get it yourself? I mean seriously...….. wtf is up with that? RNG is RNG, but c'mon.

My grind for Lich king dungeon Boots on Shaman and TBC Chest/Belt on Rogue is the same story. Its just a chance of drop grind and so happens to be the final boss in The Nexus, BF, and Ramparts. It was mentioned early but the groups for the bracket are the best place to ask for help. Having four level 59s and one higher carry brings good results and also 5 man dungeon teams of 59s are better then randoms because we are not concerned with dungeon quests and can skip not needed bosses. (also higher then normal DPS)

I feel your pain but so will your opponent when you are geared to the nines and own em!

I remember farming the socket gear on my 50 rogue, I never wanted to run slave pens ever again after that's for sure. I didnt use any skips or anything I just qued random dungeon finder while I farmed proffs up.

It was an experience that's for sure.
