I. Introduction

About the Author: I go by the in game name Samhain, I've played in the nineteen bracket from Vanilla all the way through Warlords of Draenor. I originally played rogue but throughout the years I have played every class in each of their expansions and have become very knowledgeable about every aspect of every class. With the announcement of Classic WoW servers at Blizzcon 2017, I am making this guide to help the players that didn't get to experience the nineteen bracket as it was at the games original release.

III. Gearing Your Priest

Gearing your Priest in Classic WoW is a little more complex than in current retail because there is no option to lock your experience. Discovering the areas you need to do your quests in before hand and doing your quests at the earliest level possible is vital.

I also use a Burning Crusade database for the links, because there are no Classic databases that work with forum links, to see the items actual vanilla stats use this database https://db.vanillagaming.org/

V. Priest Talents

Standard Holy Spec
Healing Focus 2/2, Improved Renew 3/3, Divine Fury 5/5 - This is the best healing spec using Heal instead of Lesser Heal for larger heals and better mana efficiency.
https://db.vanillagaming.org/?talent#bZf0x

Wand Spec

Wand Specialization 5/5, Healing Focus 2/2, Improved Renew - This is more of a support priest spec capable of dealing damage but has slower burst healing capabilities. Priests using this spec usually focus more on instant casts like shadow word: pain, renew and dispel in between wanding.

VI. Mastering Your Class

Priest_Role
Healer

Stat_Priority
Intellect > Healing Power > Stamina > MP5 > Spirit

Priest Statistics

1 Intellect = 15 Mana / X% Spell Crit

1 Healing Power =

1 Stamina = 10 Health

MP5 = (Mana per 5 seconds) Mana that is restored every 5 seconds in and out of combat.

1 Spirit =

Mana Efficiency

Mana efficiency refers to the most cost effective way to heal or in other words the most healing per point of mana. In Classic mana does not regenerate like it does in retail today, you have to be smart when using your mana and know what spells will maximize your healing capabilities and which will render your mana pool useless.

Formula for calculating mana efficiency
Spell Average Amount Healed ÷ Mana Cost = Mana Efficiency

For example, below are the spells by highest efficiency to lowest efficiency based on the average healing of each spell without any healing power.

Heal (Rank 1) - 2.05
Lesser Heal (Rank 3) - 1.95
Renew (Rank 2) - 1.76 Improved Renew 3/3 - 1.53 Unspeced
Lesser Heal (Rank 2) - 1.74
Renew (Rank 1) - 1.72 Improved Renew 3/3 - 1.51 Unspeced
Lesser Heal (Rank 1) - 1.71
Powerword: Shield (Rank 3) - 1.31 Improved Powerword: Shield 3/3 - 1.21 Unspeced
Powerword: Shield (Rank 2) - 1.26 Improved Powerword: Shield 3/3 - 1.1 Unspeced
Powerword: Shield (Rank 1) - 1.12 Improved Powerword: Shield 3/3 - 0.97 Unspeced

Heal
(Rank 1) is the most efficient healing spell, specing into Divine Fury brings your Heal spell to a 2.5 second cast and it is also the most effective way in the bracket to burst heal. Improved Renew brings up your renews mana efficiency a good amount, I use renew on allies when I am repositioning or kiting when no one is in danger of dying, try not to over heal your allies with renew. Power Word: Shield is not worth using in vanilla, it costs too much mana for such a low amount of absorption, you will only be throwing mana away that could be used much more efficiently, if your ally is in danger of dying I recommend spamming Lesser Heal (Rank 1) instead of casting Powerword: Shield. Dispel Magic can be more mana efficient than any other spell depending on the circumstance, if you're quick at dispelling removing things like a glass cannon warlocks corruption can save your teammate from a lot of hurt at a lower cost than what you would of healed for that full duration of corruption.

Advanced Unit Frames

The default interface for battlegrounds in Classic is horrible, especially for playing a healer class, the first thing you will want to do before entering Warsong Gultch is pick up a good unit frame add-on that will allow you to view your entire raid in battlegrounds. The best unit frame add-on in Classic is Luna Unit Frames but you can also use Grid.

Grid

Other Useful Add-ons
Decursive is another great add-on that displays your teammates debuffs all in a bar that can be moved to a more convenient and visible location, allows you to assign Dispel Magic to your left or right mouse click when you interact with the buff bar, you can also customize the spells you want to be displayed in the debuff bar, be sure to only assign magical effects to be displayed. Examples - Polymorph, Fear, Hammer of Justice, Corruption.

I actually loved reading this thank for for the look back. I remember doing all this stuff with my buddy as i stood around dead as to avoid gaining exp lol. good o'l days

Hello PotNoodle, the best race on alliance side to play as priest is human, at least at the level 19 bracket, that changes from level 20+ due to the the dwarfs second priest specific racial https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=6346/fear-ward.

Though humans do share the same priest racial as dwarf https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=19236/desperate-prayer, their other racial abilities are much better than dwarfs.

With rogues being very powerful in the 19 bracket you will see many of them and https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=20600/perception is a great way to counter them before eating an ambush.

As I said in the guide mana efficiency is a very important thing in Classic WoW all serious twink healers will have an alternate mana regeneration set stacking spirit making https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=20598/the-human-spirit a very useful racial to have.

Also though https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=20599/diplomacy is not directly useful in PvP, it makes farming your https://classic.wowhead.com/item=16768/furbolg-medicine-pouch a bit easier.

Laslty I would like to point out that dwarf racials don't offer anything you can't rid of yourself. Poisons are removed with https://classic.wowhead.com/item=6452/anti-venom. and frost root and snare effects can be removed with https://classic.wowhead.com/spell=527/dispel-magic.

It's been sometime since I have updated this guide I intend on updating it soon with better hyperlinks and more information.

Really cool guide! but you didn't mention anything about class specific addons.. what are those? found a brief note on them here, but that's the first I hear about them o_O

I also recommend the addon Healcomm. It tells you when an ally has an incoming heal. This helps save mana and prevent overhealing.

As a long time user of Healcom, I highly recommend it. I can't imagine not having it ><

Just come across this guide, questioning this specifically - Power Word: Shield is not worth using in vanilla, it costs too much mana for such a low amount of absorption, you will only be throwing mana away that could be used much more efficiently, if your ally is in danger of dying I recommend spamming Lesser Heal (Rank 1) instead of casting Powerword: Shield. -

Power Word: Shield isn't for heal efficiency, it's to avoid spell interruption and rage generation - as well as an instant 'heal' and a pre-emtive 'heal'. Therefore i would have to agree quite significantly, and say that that PWS is in fact a very important spell and worth using!
