Blizzard Explains the Entire History of World of Warcraft
Blizzard's Ion Hazzikostas, Patrick Magruder and Jimmy Lo tell the entire history of World of Warcraft

Gladiator's Sanctum Realm - Battle for Azeroth Beta
The Gladiator's Sanctum PvP testing realm is now active on beta!

  • You are able to create Level 120 characters, equip them with item level 370 gear, gems, and enchants.
  • This realm is for PvP testing, so you won't be able to go and do PvE things.

PvP Scaling - Battle for Azeroth

So the goal with "scaling" in PvP is merely to reduce the power gap between players where appropriate. In PvE, this is not a big deal. Theoretically if you gain 200% player power from the first tier of an expansion to the last in PvE, none of the creatures are going to complain. But if you have just leveled up (or are in the process of leveling in a zone with max level players), the power difference may not "feel fair."

The point of the scaling changes is not to make it so levels or gear don't matter. A player who is higher level than you and/or has a higher iLevel than you are going to have an advantage.

We were experimenting with using the system to also work between much larger level gaps (i.e. a level 60 player vs a level 120 player), but have decided to only utilize it for players at level 110 to 120 for now.

Thanks for your feedback and testing on this feature, it's helped out a ton!

Typical blizzard, implementing a system that only end gamers can get a hold of

Cos it was abused by low lvls on Beta and PTR and 110/120s complained on forums. If low lvls did not PVP against top lvl players nothing would’ve happened, because blizzard wouldn’t have enough data/ppl wouldn’t complain.

Meh understandable, I don't think blizz wants situations where level 60s/70s with gems just destroy 110+ players. In some way levels should also feel meaningfull. Not that I mind that much since 19s can't use warmode anyways :/

Look at it this way. They have the tec now. First build was balanced.
a level 20 and a level 110 did same 3% hp on spell to each other.
Was great.

Blizz had 2 way with it:
- leave it as it is now (levelers get destroyed and everyone got use to the fact)
- make a ballz move on the eve of new expac (make everyone same and allow true competitiveness in pvp)

The amount of outcry from second choice is far more damaging in terms of pr and how people would see the expansion.
Can you imagine the sweet sweet fuckboy tears on youtube when twinks with less spells rollingover mythic raiders?
oh man!

Community as a whole just hasn't evolved far enough to say goodbye to levels and ilevels.
They speak of "balance" but they dont want any in reality.

Shame indeed. Blizz said themselves they wanted to fix the issue of levelers and war mode.
Good intentions dont pay bills in the end i guess.

Whatever.
1 less person interested in war mode.

Wait, so do low levels even have a chance to PVP with higher levels anymore? I know that in live it's pretty much impossible since miss chances are so high. It might still be fun for a group of low level twinks to gang up on a high level so I wish that were at least possible.

Personally I would like a PVP environment where high levels are given the obvious advantage but it is still possible for a low level to kill them given enough skill and effort.

They should take a look at the actual game, rather than posts from butthurt 110s who got out-played by twinks. They pretty much fixed the "60s/70s destroy 110s thing" later on, and it worked completely fine. It just allowed players between much smaller level gaps to compete with each others, 50s could fight 60s, 60s could fight 70s etc.
In a game where zones scale 20-60, 60-80 and so on, there should be a system that scales players accordingly.
But it wouldn't surprise me if they add this feature in future patches, just a little more tweaked.

Currently on beta you still have 100% hit-chance against high level players, they only took away the dmg scaling. Im pretty sure that will stay, wouldn't make sense to revert this.. atleast let us land abilities on high levels Blizz! :p

That’s just dumb to take it away for all but lvl 110’s to 120’s.
So higher level toons can simply go spam AoE in low level zones and get the bounty hunter tag? Or will they take Warmode away also for us?.
If a 120 can’t take out a lvl 20 with all their extra abilities then they seriously need to turn Warmode off.
Hopefully it comes back very soon otherwise this is just stupid. No incentive for low levels to turn on Warmode.

Based on you asking Blizzard to nerf Fel Invasion gear / grandfathered gear because you don't have it and "us" that do would give an advantage says otherwise.

Realistically the tears were too much for Blizzard, people don't want competitive PvP outside of RBG's and Arena, to be out played by someone of a lower level with less abilities is too much for most of the WoW population.

I was really up for Warmode, now out of principle i won't be turning it on, I'll just gear up my twinks and faceroll through pug BG's with every tool / toy / consumable at my disposal and wait for the tears

That post was made when twinks were actually overpowered compared to higher levels, easilly tanking or killing them without much effort. Since then, there has been balance-related adjustments that evened out this battleground until recently when the whole thing was scrapped altogether in favour of focusing on 110-120 level players.

And also, I do have Fel Invasion gear but that's beyond the purpose of that thread. Perhaps I am romanticising my fondness with grandfathered gear but I have no problem with most grandfathered gear, in fact I think it's great. Very iconic and specific pieces of gear like Inferno Robe, Jutebraid, Gravestone Sceptive etc (which I don't have for your information) have a very notable and iconic history to them. But unfortunately, all of that is brushed away when ultimately the BiS gear from now on would always be Legion Invasion gear which was unfortunately distributed in a very probability-stricken manner. It's a bit depressing to see armories of everyone wearing just Fel gear when they could be a colourful array of different gear as is in the time before Legion.

I've apologised for my outlandish and hypocritical stance but unfortunately I can't delete that thread even if I want to. If you still want to be a cynical and virulent about that, then so be it, but there was no need to bring up that thread in this just to be spiteful.

In bfa fel gear is not bis every slot, maybe a few pieces...

It's "working as intended" as Blizzard would usually say. Such a disappointment.

Yeah. It seems like lately Blizz is really focused in maintaining their current playerbase rather than making good systems. They complain about leveling being too easy, BAM, leveling takes longer now. They complain about lowbies wrecking them at max level, BAM, nerfed. What's funny is that people have been complaining that Blizz hasn't been listening to their community for a long time, but now that they do, they make changes that hurt the community more than it helps

Let me play devil's advocate here. From a non-twink perspective, it's not all that good for the game that low level players are (somewhat) equally as strong as high level players. I'd say 2 very fundamental parts of MMORPG's is the gearing aspect (which empowers a character) and the leveling aspect (which empowers a character). A high level should always have the advantage.

Blizz could have gone for a system where each level only grants small % extra stats or something, so people would still feel stronger by leveling up. This change had the potential to boost world PvP quite big, so from that perspective it's sad they didn't pursue their initial thoughts.
