Intro
Hello everyone, thank you for referring to this guide. I have been playing holy paladin since cataclysm, not just at 20 but to 70.
As of this current patch/expansion Holy Paladins are very unique in their specialization and roles.
I have taught my little brother the basics to playing WoW since he always gets on my account lol, I feel I can teach more of my knowledge.

Foremost I will begin by telling you that this guide is to help you understand the basics on how to become the most effective in PVP.
This guide is NOT going to help you improve in essential general play, you MUST set up the keybinds & AddOns that fit best to your playstyle. That is the only way you will achieve maximum PVP potential.

If you are an experienced holy paladin feel free to just scroll through the Contents to get any info you are looking for :)

Allow me to tell you what you will be expecting and what you should be focusing. Holy Paladins are fun but as of now they are not top DPS or top Heals ( Even though we can 1v1 any class lol). Many see that as a weakness... I tell you this now NOT TO JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. What puts Holy Paladins over the top is their developed hybrid spells. I will explain to you what in deeper thought in the Tactics & Role Content but as of now I'll put it to you this way: You must not see Holy Paladins as weak healers, Rather the best damn support class there is! Distributing healing & denounce debuffs will cover your lack of high healing. Most of all you are known for your Cleanse spell... Fears, DoTs, and Poison... ALL OF IT is gone at your finger tip. You WILL turn the game if you play your cards right with this spells!

Yes my "PRO" Tips, advice, and opinions will be in pink :)

Slang
  • DoT = Damage Over Time
  • Hpalls= Holy Paladins
  • CC = Stun

Races & Factions

Only a few races have the privilege NAY the blessings, to have become a holy warrior AKA Paladin.

Factions are a an important thing to take into consideration. Some may have items that favor you more or less. The gear you want is important and depending whether your faction can provide the gear will affect your play style. The most important of course is the race that the faction can offer. Most of all it really comes down to your community with who you want to play. If you have to play with a friend in a certain faction don't sweat it because I assure you now there is not a BIG difference in the factions stat wise.

Horde

Tauren (Click For Full Detail) In a nutshell they crit higher, can pick herbs faster, can stomp and CC enemies around them, Resistance to Nature Damage, and have increased stamina! Insane I know, cows are... man beasts.. literately. There really is no right or wrong choice for choosing either Tauren or Blood Elf.. I am going to suggest you go with Tauren, over all it provides benefits that stick with your permanently unlike blood elf that just gives you a instant ability. Especially if we speak of the Hpall Spec... Its just more fitting. Im gonna recommend a Hybrid Build that involves AGM trinket and well since you are rolling Horde you wont really need it because of the stamina and it will be acceptable to choose the Horde Insignia.. More on that in the Gear Section.
Blood Elf (Click For Full Detail)
In a nutshell they can go to levels of profession above limit for enchanting. Arcane Torrent is a unique spells its instant unlike tauren's stomp but no CC just a AoE Silence and it makes you gain a charge of holy power. Resistance to Arcane Damage. Of course... its nice to have that extra charge of holy power.. keep in mind though you wont be using them a lot... you will see in the Tactics Section.

Alliance

Human (Click For Full Detail) In a nutshell humans have increased versatility, great for over all damage and healing. They have increased reputation gains... good for um you know getting good with the paladin order . Of course who could forget the Every Man For Him Self ability..... This is what makes humans one of the greatest choices for any class not just hpall. It allows you to free your self from CC or any movement deduction spell, any loss of control really, fear charm or sleep. I strongly advice this race choice for Alliance players as it provides the ability to free up a trinket slot. When it comes to trinkets we need them the most!
Dwarf (Click For Full Detail)
In a nutshell dwarfs have increased critical damage, Resistant to Frost Damage, and of course the Stone Form ability which removes all poison, magic, bleeds, or any type of DoT really, and it decreases your damage taken b 10% for 8 seconds.[/COLOR]
Draenei (Click For Full Detail)
In a nutshell Draeneis have increased intellect scaling with level, its great for keeping your intellect balanced with hybrid sets. They have increased Jewel crafting which puts you over the limit by 10. Of course the Gift of the Naaru ability which heals 20% of your total HP over 5 seconds!

Stats, Gear, and Enchants

Enchants & Stat Priority
I will be showing you the main and basic builds that you should be sticking to. Stats are all dependent on your gear set. This stat section will mainly just focus on your main and basic sets that you should stick to and it will give you a view basic stat priority (of course it will change if with your actual set stat priority)

Migitation>Stamina or Migitation=Stamina The reason for this build is just to stick with more armor. Of course there are situations with a Stamina Set (Example: You will choose Magicians Mantle because it is the most stamina item but it is cloth like and weak in armor). Paladins can wear Mail, take opportunity of that :)

Critical=Intellect I do not want you guys to fight over which is better. What I am trying to say is if there is a ring with (just an example lol) 3 intellect and 2 critical and there is another ring with 5 critical, you'd best be off with the 3 critical and 3 intellect ring.

Haste>Overall Haste is important his patch now with the PvP looms giving haste benefits. Try to apply haste to your Sets but only if your main priority stat still comes out on top.

Haste>Intellect>Critical>Stamina>Armor>Spirit>Versatility

Gear

Hybrid

Stamina
  • Head Lucky Fishing Hat (BiS
  • Neck: Thick Bronze Necklace (BiS)
  • Shoulder: Magicians Mantle (BiS) Subsititude: Pristine Lightforge Spaulders
  • Chest: Mystical Vest of the Elements (BiS) or Burnished Breastplate of the Might (BiS) or Mystic's Robe (BiS)
  • Bracers: Mindthrust Bracers (BiS) or Uninsured Bracers (BiS) Substitude: Cuffs of the Black Elements
  • Hands: Gloves of the Hero (BiS) or Serpentist Gloves (BiS) Substitude: Serpent Gloves (different)
  • Waist: Earthbound Gridle of Stamina (BiS)
  • Legs: Thaelrid's Greaves (BiS) or Scales of Aku'mai (BiS)
  • Feet: Slippers of Unturned Loyalties (BiS) or Corpse Rompers (BiS)
  • Ring 1: Dread Pirate Ring (BiS) Substitude: Blood ring
  • Ring 2: Gloaming Band (BiS) or Ring of Pardons (BiS) Substitude: Blood Ring
  • Trinket1: Arena Grandmaster (BiS) Substitude: Drune of Duty
  • Trinket2: Arena Grandmaster (BiS Human Only) Substitude: Inherited Insignia of the Horde (Alliance)
  • Weapon: The Blessed Hammer of Grace (BiS) Substitude: Mace of the Order
  • Shield: Weathered Observer's Shield (BiS)

Haste
Same as Hybrid set with a few exceptions
  • Necklace: Thick Bronze Necklace (DEFENSIVE HASTE) or Brilliant Necklace (OFFENSIVE HASTE)
  • Chest: Burnished Breastplate of the Might (DEFENSIVE HASTE) or Gorestained Garb (OFFESIVE HASTE)
  • Trinket1: Swifthand of Justice (Human only) Inherited Insignia of the Alliance (Horde)
  • Trinket2: Swifthand of Justice

It seems crazy to throw in Burnished Breast Plate of the Might in there, I assure you that it works amazing. Defensive and Offensive haste just means that with Offensive you get more intellect therefore higher crits in both healing and damage. Also AN IMPORTANT thing to remember is if you have a tauren..well you can get away with not equipping an AGM so you can replace it with something more effective. Defensive Haste means you are more defensive and not willing to die with more stamina and armor. I will direct you to Earl's Guide for any other sets I missed.

This are the best Sets to roll with. Full output on Crit or Intellect is not recommended so I will not be putting them as any sets here.

Tactics & Roles
Spells I Will be mentioning: (Click Them) Cleanse, Denounce, Divine Shield, Flash of Light, Hammer of Justice, Holy Shock, Judgement, LoH, Word of Glory

Healer
Offensive healer- When playing an offensive healer you will want to focus on using either Offensive Haste set or Hybrid. Offensive Haste should mostly be used when premading. You will know your team has your back and will work with you to make it easy on your back. Your going to be obviously be healing with flash of light and holy shock but do not be afraid to throw a bit of denounces on people who are making it difficult on your teammate or you. This is also the only time I will suggest you use Word of Glory, I will explain to you in a minute why that is. If you are going up a comp that has a Caster>Mele ratio I suggest going full haste, if however the ratio is Mele>Caster then go Hybrid, but by all means don't be afraid to switch it up at times.

Defensive Healer- When playing a defensive healer you will want to focus on using your Stamina Set, Hybrid Set, or Defensive Haste set. Same applies as Offensive Healer. HOWEVER you will not be using Word of Glory as you will need to move around quicker, it will only be a waste to cast, it is slow and heals so little. Mainly the difference between defensive healer and offensive healer are survival towards you... just YOU. It provides the nice stamina and armor to survive.

Hybrid
I strongly recommend this when pugging. It assures you a nice survival and playstyle. Of course for this role you will be using Hybrid set. Again, do not hesitate to change it in the middle of the BG/Arena if needed. Your main goal now is to throw denounces and flash of lights. Try to maintain a 1 to 2 ratio of casting. 1 being Denounce and 2 being Flash of light. This is also how you can 1v1 most classes lol. Do not use Word of Glory as, again, waste of time and heals so little.

Flag Carrier
For this you will be using the only choice that makes since, the Stamina Set. Flag carrying is not an excuse to not heal but you will not be doing it so often. I do not want you going full Haste. You will be using Burnished BoA chest piece and not the cloth (Mystic's Robe). It will all fall in place as soon as it stacks don't worry. I recommend you run with the Pursuit of Justice talent, but you can also get the Speed of Light talent. Having permanent moving is cool with me. If you have swiftpots then by all means roll Speed of Light as swiftpot does not stack with either Talents but it makes since to use Speed of Light right after using Swiftpot (or viceversa). I will direct you to the Flag Carrying Guide for more tips on this.

Basic Roles & Tactics
Now there are somethings that I should mention in case there are people new to caster or healer. You obviously want to Loss Of Sight enemies while keeping an eye on your teammates. Fake cast if you can, best used on CC and Silencing classes. Use cleanse all the time. Whenever your teammate is feared or rooted by annoying mages and locks use cleanse! When dueling rogues and they slow you down with their annoying poison, use cleanse!! Cleanse... its such a god like spell. It is very very very op! You CAN turn the game around if you use that correctly. Use denounce when dueling druids or high bursting classes. You must maintain the denounce debuff on, specifically when they are going to burst... Heal and Debuff is all I can say. They will never land a critical strike on you and you should be able to heal back up. Example: Use flash of Light and Denounce by order.. literately, just denounce, flash, denounce, flash, you get the point. Each cast will be enough time.. to keep rejuvenating the debuff and healing yourself.. once he bites just DPS hardcore with holy shock and denounce. If it is a Night Elf Druid then use your trinket (or racial) in the first rake CC. The second one will be less harsh and you can Holy Shock yourself back to balance. You can also avoid all this by using Divine Shield >:) I get a lot of complain though so I wont recommend it lol.

Really just use Hammer of Justice when needed. To interrupt a spellcast or just get enemies of your teammates back. You will only use judgement when your going to kill a target and it runs away from you and you cannot cast denounce or just to put an extra instant damage that is needed to finish off the target (try to get that KB hehe). I recommend always running with Pursuit of Justice talent. It really provides permanent speed and you wont be using your Word of Glory at most time. Word of Glory should only really be used to conserve mana since you will not be having to much spirit.

Lay on Hands (LoH) and Divine shield.. they are cheap but not in Arenas or BGs. Duel wise... yes I mean you really don't need them unless your really sure you going to lose. Mostly it will probably be from a 29 or veteran. You always have that excuse to fall back on if you do use the big CDS.

The main point to a hybrid hpall is just to keep support in every single case. Healing, Removing CC & DoTs, and preventing crits & DPSing.

Conclusion & Macros
Macros
Macros are pretty important. I have only a few to share with you but they are very effective. Besides the basic Focus Macros (look in other guides for them if you don't know what they are lol) I recommend you use this.
/target ( Your Name )
#showtooltip
/cast Holy Shock
/targetlasttarget

Make sure to make this a cool holy like Icon healing spell that will be easy to remember. This will separate your two holy shock spells. Which? Well that macro you see if for healing yourself without having to distarget your current target. No matter if friendly or enemy that is for healing yourself and just yourself!

I guess there really is not much left to teach you. There are many more things to hpalls but those are the important and basic things. The rest you will learn yourself through experience and time. You are the guy who keeps your team moving & and brings mental pain to your enemies.

Thank you for reading my guide. Now go out there and bring light to those damned players in our bracket! Make them fear our class even more!!!

i really dont know why people are against going for versatility. as for me, ill be having versatility > int = spell power > stam > haste > crit > spirit. all while using plate/mail int heirlooms for armor. other gears' armor type dont really have a huge difference. crit is not so good cos it only does 150% damage

The reason its like that is because this is an F2P version. We don't have access to what I believe now is, zero versa gear and enchants. And as I mention of this current patch, haste is the way to go.

Few things I noticed:
- your autocorrect changes "sense" to "since".
- your Stamina-Set has no Cloak - Id say Stiches Stichings for alliance and Tranquillien Cloak for Horde. Also Sandals of Sacrifice are 9 Stam vs. 7 of CR. And SLF still max Stam.
- In general you have some Fraction-specific items (like Slippers) and the use of "BiS" isnt rly a good idea in this part imo. For example MTB or Lightforge Spaulders are not BiS for a Holy (but that is ofc debatable).
- while you wrote about talents you dont explain them. 1 small section for talents would be ok I guess?! Also I recommend SoL over PoJ any time atm. Not only is it helpful to survive but with the short hammerrange it offers you a fast in-out-opportunity to get a stun + time to get to safety.
- Tauren get 34 HP more iirc vs. Belf Shieldenchant 1 Stam (so the difference is rather small).
- Gloaming Band is gf. Alliance needs a second ringchoice cause DPR is still no giveaway ;)
- Macros: Focus-HoJ / Focus-Denounce is a must have imo
- you wont change gearsets in the middle of arena ;)
- more Love for Mark of Tyranny!

3 intellect and 2 critical and there is another ring with 5 critical, you'd best be off with the 3 critical and 3 intellect ring.
- You may wanna check this or explain where the 3. ring comes from ;)

Haste>Intellect>Critical>Stamina>Armor>Spirit>Vers atility
- While this is ofc everybodys own decision I really recommend not putting stam behind crit and def. not spirit behind armor. Esp. in 2s Holydins will run oom faster than every other healer.
Id go with Haste>Int=Stam>Spirit>Armor

XD i noticed that the +1 stamina shield enchant does nothing to your health and that +3 health gives more than +1 stamina for bracers.

Yep absolutely right. Still WiP as I mention, didn't have time to add another section but I'm on it now. There's a lot of things I didn't mention also lol not just the ones you pointed out, thank you

Also I wasn't aware of any Stam enchant may you pink please?

did some testing with the numbers in bgs (level 29 scaling) using my own stats.

25 crit = 4.42%, so 1 crit = 0.1768%
crits only deal 50% damage in bgs. so you gain 0.0884% damage/healing per crit.

17 haste = 3.74%, so 1 haste = 0.22%
this should be exactly 0.22% damage/healing per crit.

took off all my gear and had 67 spell power.
flash of light heals for 253.
denounce damages for 110.
holy shock damages for 141 or heals for 117.

put on all my gear and had 208 spell power.
flash of light heals for 782.
denounce damages for 343.
holy shock damages for 437 or heals for 364.

the differences are 141 spell power.
flash of light 529. so 3.75 per spell power.
denounce 233. so 1.65 per spell power.
holy shock 296 and 247. so 2.1 and 1.75 per spell power.

now if i take 208 spell power as my base damage/healing, and add 1 spell power, i will gain
3.75/782=0.48% for flash of light.
1.65/343=0.48% for denounce.
2.1/437=0.48% and 1.75/364=0.48% for holy shock.

which is actually the highest % gain. so should be int/spell power > haste > crit.

edit: fixed some calculations. seems like all damage/healing comes from spell power. so % gain from 1 extra spell power is exactly 1/currentspellpower

Suggestions
-- You could trim the text; you seem to post in different language now than you did then, and you have more experience. If you trim it, they will come. Too much text and too much color can intimidate or irritate readers The color, spoilers, and different sizes can keep attention and keep things distinct, instead of just making your wall a colorful wall.

-- You could add macros to combine similar helpful and harmful spells, depending on how you target. For instance (memory help me):

/cast [help] Flash of Light
/cast [harm] Denounce

-- Without instant WoG, burst healing with FoL -> shock is (I assume) still super important. Major tactic not mentioned. Same with FoL -> Cleanse; it may seem simple, but instants after casts is a major major tactic

-- Sprint for HoJs or escape probably remains very good. You could explain the merits of each choice, like you did with gear and race.

-- Please! give your experience with effective use of each ability! Timing is so incredibly important.
In general, this is a great undertaking and I appreciate it cuz hpal was fun, and I think if you look back through it now that it's been a few months, you might really polish it up. But I'm just very particular! :D
