The Future Prospects of Twinks ?

Grandfathered
Hi,

I've been playing WoW since TBC and consider myself experienced, however I'm relatively new to twinking (started in Legion). I've been hearing mainly bad feedback on how twinking in general has evolved (with some exceptions, of course). The most frequently mentioned issues are that 1) you can have a twink levelled and 85-90% geared in a day with minimal effort; 2) BG pops are horrible (relatively); 3) iPvP. In addition, some people are switching to private servers which kind of further reflects the ongoing trends of the twink community.

Now, I want to make one thing clear - this thread is not to convince me (or someone else) on staying/leaving retail or twinking in general. I, for one, will continue twinking in retail. This is also not to debate on the changes made to twinking in the past years. It is what it is - let's get over it.

This thread is to discuss what the future prospects of (retail) twinking are likely to be, given the changes and trends of the past years.

Will it die?
Will it remain existant as people love twinking more than they dislike the changes? If so, will everyone end up playing their own favorite expansions in private servers despite significantly smaller populations OR remain in retail?

I mean, first twinks date back all the way to vanilla and it's hard to comprehend that it might be over after existing for so many years.

I would appreciate seeing a mix of opinions, not just 'nah m8 tinks r ded fck blizz man im so misunderstood' - assuming there are any.

Peace!

Luwoo

I don't believe that twinking will ever die completely. Blizzard has certainly made some big changes that make it a lot less fun than it was before, but those changes haven't made twinking obsolete. It's just a matter of whether or not you can accept the changes and still find ways to enjoy it. As for what changes will be made in the future, well, who knows. There's no telling what they might do next, but in my honest opinion, I don't think it will get any worse. It seems like Blizzard's goal was to balance things more, and they've accomplished that for the most part. I don't see them changing the current system for iPvP any time soon. They will likely continue to tweak it here and there, but I believe it is here to stay for a while. I very seriously doubt that things will ever go back to the way they were before the major changes. That will forever remain a nostalgic memory, as far as I'm concerned. Like you said, it is what it is.

personally, i play this game not only for the player vs player but because it gives me solace.

some of the relationships i've made over the years in certain brackets of twinking or in the entirety of the games content are lifelong. the community that a person surrounds themselves with will dramatically affect the positive or negative experiences you'll have. (in any bracket)

that being said twinking is not something i do for strictly player vs player otherwise i'd be a very unhappy person given the games current state.

however, i weather through every nerf and every horrible patch and expansion because i enjoy and love playing with the people i've grown to know, and because the games player vs player is so unique and addicting.

for me personally if you take away the community then that is when twinking will die.

i don't care if i can't steam roll, i don't care if the games not balanced, i've been riding this game out through the good and bad for over 10 years.

twinking will never die for me because i have a few people who are as addicted to this game as i am, and even if they move on to other games their will always be new people in my bracket to meet and teach and that is what keeps me playing.

this games social aspect and its player vs player is like no other game and in my opinion as long as their are twinks with this mindset than twinking will never die.

(all of this is in my opinion and i hope its not off topic of anything and that it made sense)

This is exactly what I was looking for and thanks for your opinion. I too share the same view that twinking will survive as long as the community is present. But when I talk about twinking dying, what I mean is that the community will be so scarce that low lvl pvp will consist 99% of lvlers and only hardcore twinks will remain. So, technically it's not dead but in reality there's not much of a difference

Twinking will continue to grow exponentially, twinking had the wind taken out of it upon release of Legion and despite some negativity habitually perpetuated on these forums by people who don't even log on twinks since legion, twinking is far from dead, a new kind of twink is taking over.

Our numbers, our guilds, our activity, all increasing, this isn't something you can dispute once armed with the facts, put emotion aside and look at the objective indicators, log on your twink and do some looking around in games and outside of the Orgrimmar or Goldshire of different servers with a history of twinking and it becomes self evident, the merge has provided us with passive growth, no longer do we need things like GG19 and guilds dedicated to aggressive funding to tackle growth issues or meet sustainability requirements.

Now this is from the perspective of someone in my unique position, I talk to new twinks almost daily, I see the new user rate on the website, I see activity rates as virtually the same as WoD, I see guilds I've never heard of, and twinks I've never heard of. I see the fact that many people who don't twink anymore still log on this website in hopes that something competitive that suits their desires will arise.

All these things point to the fact that there is not a chance in hell that it's going anywhere, if things go well with the GCTL and other events along with the passive growth via the bracket merge than it is nearly certain twinking will see a level of activity that many will be shocked to discover within the next year or two. Any attempt to argue otherwise is based on a lack of knowledge and/or emotion clouding objective judgement/being out of touch with things.

It would be a golden age for low level PvP, but for the hunters. The hunters however, are very, very bad.

As for private servers vs retail, a person could participate in both. Although I only spend a fraction of what some people do playing I find time to do it.

I am sure @Conq would agree, each expansion, each patch, each FoTM, etc. we have doomsayers saying that this will be the "end of twinking". Those people come and they go. And guess what? Twinking is still here.

People have to realize, not everyone plays WoW (or even lowbie PvP) for "competition", some play for fun. It is only a game after all.

/cheers

To elaborate on the doomsayers point. It has become such commonplace after each expansion for these people to become outspoken about changes and how the brackets are "dead". So much so, that the casual fan base still says shit like "twinks still exist?".

While on a certain level, the competitive premading/wargaming scene is smaller than the last few years, the number of active twinks in one of the many WSG/AB/EotS games is much higher than those years.

Twinks are playing on servers I've never even fucking heard of, and thats awesome. You can make a twink and gear it to the "good enough" point in a day. Obviously gear from BG crates and AGM, etc. will take further work.

I must admit, I am burnt out a bit from retail twinking. Mostly because my friends from the years have left the bracket and I log on feeling less excited. Its nice to meet new people and spark some new friendships, but they aren't the same. A lot of the dudes from District Nineteen (the largest twink guild on my server/Allince side) are great.. and then a lot of them quite toxic and probably around the age of 14. Its been odd trying to navigate through the large pile of twinks are these days.

Toxicity spreads like a virus. It is up to each and every one of us to stop it and vaccinate others by being welcoming members.

I have a couple toons in D19 as well. I too have witnessed these acts of immaturity that is quite common place in today's WoW. We witness here as well and on the Internet in general.
People act like that simply because it is tolerated. If it were not tolerated they would not act like that.

Hello,
I'd like to say Twinking will never die!
I've played since vanilla and one of the most fun things about twinking is that every expansion and patch even.. there are new things to explore and do... Maybe change a few enchants.. get a few new skills and maybe some new low level quests. Maybe updates to some dungeons.. there is always something happening and especially lvl 10-19 twinking in BG without mounts is just an unique experience.
Also since the Pre event of Legion it seems blizz is making more and more things scale to level!! Which is super promising for us twinks.. We might even walk around with epic and socketed/ Titanforged gear in a few years if it keeps going like this.. For example with the Love is in the air event there is an Epic Necklace availiable for 20+ chars! WHaii :( i wanted it on 19.. but yeah still awesome for 20s. And the Pre legion event was a big success so there is a good chanse similar level scaling things will be around for us to jump on.
the Twink community in WoW is just another bag, and we all have so much love for it.
Twinks for life!

my twink is just doing pve stuff during events now. started with legion invasion during prepatch and now getting the lunar festival toys. attempted to get the toy durong pirates day but its bugged for vets. killed greench during winters veil but cant get quest. no reason to log in any other time

I stopped playing retail for the time being, but last time I checked, there was some interesting activity in the with 99s and 101-109s with ability to obtain artifacts weapons. The ability to progress on something with your twink seems attractive.

Anyone who has been twinking for over a decade knows that instanced pvp twinking is no more. You have to find a new name to describe what you are doing in instant pvp these days because it simply is not twinking anymore. Instanced pvp is an arcade game now without any personal tweeking and tuning. Instanced pvp was our way to show we were twinkers and for many it was the main thing twinkers did; playing instanced pvp and tweeking/tuning was what we did to perfect our characters (we can't even do that now anymore).

I've read some say twinking just evolved and yes I agree but the moment they turned open instanced pvp into an arcade game it came to an end.

I simply do not play wow (live) anymore due to how we were treaten, all this backstabbing made me hate the current version. If I would keep on playing the game it would be a sign that I agree with the changes but I don't. It is not that I can't take changes , I've been playing so long and experienced everything regarding twinking and went on, but the fact they completely removed twinking by removing open instanced pvp while it should have been treated like world pvp with the same rules, it made instanced pvp boring and our (older) characters obsolete and a very good reason to stop paying for that nonsense.

I've been feeling like a ginea pig for live for a very long time now, I am glad that it is over and it gave me a very good reason to quit playing altogether.

I obviously wish the players succes with their tweeking and tuning on live. Hope you may enjoy that but it is not my cup of tea anymore.

Good luck.
