Best spec for mages?

Fire hits like a wet noodle on Scorch, which is like 90% of your attacks, trying to fish for crits. Inferno Blast and Pyroblast are decent, but not enough to make up for the amount of time you have to spend casting Scorch. The rest of their toolkit is about the same as any other spec. You have CC, defensives, and interrupt. I'd say Frost and Arcane are about tied in terms of viability, frost just has a couple more CC tools and a little less damage.

fire's really bad, frost has the better setup for kills, arcane hits hard but gets tunneled kinda easy

Frost is good in arena if you have a coordinated 3's comp for cc, arcane is better for the raw damage. If you're an experienced mage player by all means try out frost but if you want to actually do damage i'd definitely go for arcane. i'm not sure about fire haven't really seen much of it but i think it relies largely on crits.

Want to make a mage, so what is the best spec for mages right now ? I was thinking fire

Allot of people ask about going mage, the only problem is that thy lack serviceability. I had big planes making a 35%+ Crit chance fire mage my self but after spending most time waiting to re-spawn on the graveyard I potted that twink on hold for awhile . Now in 6.1 when run speed isn't to OP for melee classes making it impossible to kite them when you have to stand and cast spells, it might be possible. But it strongly suggests you find a good team or comp to play with so you can get some help slowing the enemies.

Imo I think the best way to play mage right now is an arcane hast stacked support mage with allot of damage and fast pollys.

But if you are planing to que solo bgs you will most likely not have a good time:p

Fire is a nice amount of damage if you have plenty of crit. Use inferno blasts to spread existing pyroblasts around or to make a single heating up into a insta pyroblast. Has plenty of movement due to scorch (can also use blazing speed during scorch ^^).

Arcane can do a ton of damage, on my vet 20 with the gift of vers enchants i get around 900/1k non crits. Slower casts tho but at 29 you have missiles. (When you have 4 or 3 charges and 3 stacks of missiles just deplete the charges and spam the missiles fast without completing full cast for some nice pressure and easy quick charges ;p). Highly suggest rolling with Ice floes for this spec so you can stay on the move(with ice floes you can get 5.5 / 6 moving spells back to back if you use it right! it's of the global cooldown ao when you apply your charges at about 3/4rd of the cast then you will complete your cast even while moving if neccesary and end up with the charge of icefloes still up. Repeat this procces 3 times and you will already have casted 3 arcane blasts or missiles and still have 3 charges of ice floes active on your mage!) Check out the talent section in my guide for more info if you're intrested :)

And frost is the allstar mage spec for me simply due to the fact that it's fast paced and has alot of utility :). With frost you're also playing more then just the mage, your pet is a huge addition to your arsenal due to the fact that you can extend your freeze range by binding /petmoveto somewhere. Also keep your pet on passive and macro it's abillities!(macros are also on my guide if you're intrested.

Hope i gave some good info and feel free to message me or ask invite me ingame so i can show you some tricks and stuff like that :)
(play both US and EU)

When people say fire is "bad" usually means its 1 of the 3 specs that requires more brain power to play.

all 3 specs are just fine if geared correctly.

There is no 'geared correctly' atm. There is so much viable gear right now that any moron who at least fills out each slot with an item is going to be 'correctly geared.' Also, how does fire require more 'brain power' to play? You do realize that out of the 3 mage specs, you can actually run around doing 100% of your damage on the move as fire, right? That your rotation (outside of the spells all mages get) consists of scorch >>>>>> Inferno Blast > Pyroblast, right? Even stacking max crit, most of your spell casts will still be scorch (which hits for like 60 damage on players), and the only time you'll cast anything else is when you get a crit. With frost you have pet management and timing the use of your fingers properly. With arcane you have to build up stacks and burst at the right time.

Neither spec allows casting while moving and take more brain power just to find opportunities to cast, let alone line up burst with other players and do all the other things mages do.

When stars align (5% chance with 35% crit) you can get 3 pyros in 5 globals. Fire is much better after it gets Critical Mass at 36.
