It's official, this virus is #$@&!

Its more severe than a cold.

And the severity of the problem isnt the disease itself (though it is actually pretty gnarly) but rather the rapidity with which the disease spreads and the medical care it requires.

For example, some estimates are saying we can expect a 40% infection rate. So...

In a town of 100,000, 40k people will get it. Given Infection/Severe case/Fatality rates, if 40k people get it, ~4,000 of those will be severe enough to require hospitalization. 400-800 of them will die.

Thats the ideal situation though.

Now, imagine those 40k people get infected in the space of a two weeks (small towns be like that). So now your hospital has to deal with 4000 cases at once. You got those beds available? The nurses? The doctors? The ventilators? Now, even in the best case, your hospital is beyond capacity. What happens when there is a car wreck? Where are those people gonna go? What happens to every other run-of-the-mill sickness and injury that normally occupy hospitals? Now we have a problem...

Yall gotta take this shit seriously. YOU might be fine. We're a mostly young population here. But your town? Your neighbors? You owe it to them to take it seriously.

This. Just stay inside if you can, I know this isn’t an option for all, but you really shouldn’t be leaving the house unless it is essential.

I go to work every day regardless! And I am well aware of the stats. We have 3 hospital centers in montreal specific for covid. All others are open for the rest of trauma/ med issues. This is Canads though, much better off than U.S.

At the very least as the virus is progressing its following the trend of becoming more infectious but less deadly (viruses want to infect as many people as possible so killing the host quickly would be detrimental to its goal).

Unfortunately this virus looks like its gonna stick around much longer than a few months and its gonna really test the limits of our current medical system, as well as safety nets in place for people in isolation/not working.

Stay safe everyone. Even if you're young and healthy you aren't invincible. Take this seriously.

Could do a spanish flu and dissappear in spring and come back with a vengeance in autumn.

Just checking in to see if the U.S. Dollar is still good! Wait wrong thread...

This is true.

But even given the *best* case scenario (think Germany? Singapore?) when all this is said and done, someone you know will have died from the Coronavirus. Maybe not a close friend or family member but we will all end up knowing someone that died. Thats just the math.

Dont be the person that infected them.

not someone, "They" locked it

didn't the current owner closed it due to being up longer than it was relevant?

You mean because gold prices are up?
But nah. Just some mod with a stick up his butt.

So back on topic to derail the topic.

Iran seems to have quite the storm on their hands, China is their main trading partner and because its a conflict seeking nation all the brass are military guys and they all have lungs that look like grandpas shed after getting gassed by Saddam.

TL;DR: People gonna die, whether it's Covid-19 or something else, such is life.

The VAST majority of Humans dying to Covid-19 are 60+ and were already compromised with other ailments like COPD, Asthma, Bronchitis, etc. I'm not saying those are the only people dying but the majority. My Mother has everything I just listed, if she gets it she's toast. It's also taken nearly 4 months to kill off ~25K people. Influenza kills ~500,000 per year Worldwide and does it in about 6 weeks.

Yes, this new Coronavirus variant (there's 3 others, H1N1 / SARS / MERS) is an unknown and we should be more careful than normal. SARS/MERS were infinitely more deadly but shorter lived and less infectious. H1N1 infected far more people but had a minuscule death rate. Influenza infects vastly more people each year, is shorter lived and less infectious.

To date, Zika / Malaria / Asthma / Tetanus / Bee Stings / falling off shit, etc kill more people annually than Covid-19 has to date. Does that mean it's "just a cold" nope, but it also doesn't mean we should all be hunkered down in a fucking basement bunker, hiding in our Toilet Paper forts, lathered up in Hand Sanitizer either.

Next Flu season this will be back and it'll just be another "Cold" we Humans have to deal with each year. The largest concern right now is Hospital capacity, that's it. Everybody is losing their minds because Humans are dumb as shit and the Media is exceptionally good at scaring us.

as a misanthrop, i approve =]

aye, to be fair I've talked to my folks about this. they're pretty much anxious about staying home and not being use to staying put compared to the some other portions of the family.

in fact, some of them doesn't believe about the whole origin story about the virus and thinks it could be a test of a chemical warfare from some random government that they just let loose for testing...
