What happens to Locked Experience when Subscription ends?

I'm considering to create a 19 Twink or a 20 Veteran, but I'm wondering what's the difference about the Locked Experience when the Subscription ends.

If you have xp off (locked xp) and NO subscription, then you cannot queue (at 19 or 20).

If you have xp on (unlocked xp), then at 19 you would be able to queue and bg, but would level to 20. At 20, you are at the "level cap" and won't level up further, despite having xp on.

So for a 19 with locked exp and no sub, you can't BG or do arenas. You can do wpvp, duel, farm rares, do dungeons, etc. But no instanced pvp.

Also important to stress that if your subscription expires while your XP is locked... than the "lock" gets corrupted, leaving you incapable of unlocking your XP without intervention by BlizzardSupport.

(...at least that's how it's been in the past. I don't actually know of anyone who's risked trying it recently.)

What happens to a 20 Veteran when Subscription ends instead?
I presume that you're asking what changes happen to the lvl-20 characters on your subbed account, when the sub ends and they become "Veteran" characters... ;)

The answer is technically "nothing". None of the characters on your account actually change, but only the ones at 20 or below are still playable.

There are some added limitations to your gameplay, however... the most significant having to do with grouping/professions/enchants. For details there's a whole Veterans forum you can investigate, but here's a good thread to get you started:

Good luck! :D

If I want to play a 20 Veteran, do I have to Lock Experience when I decide to Subscribe for playing at 120? I wonder if switching back and forth could cause issues with Banked Experience.

"Banked XP" is only a feature of the Starter Edition™ trial accounts... Vets don't have any such concerns. ;)

That's good! I did my latest Subscription in early Legion and I'll probably do another soon to try Battle for Azeroth, however I want to slowly progress on my 20 Veteran when I'm bored. Does it count as Veteran for the Banked Experience anyways?

First let's make sure that we're using the same "vocabulary" here...
  • A "Subbed" or "Paid" account:
    • Any account that currently has usable "gametime". Has no restrictions or limits within the expansion for which it was purchased (e.g., Legion).
  • A "VET" or "Veteran" account:
    • Any account that used to have usable "gametime", but no-longer does. High-level characters become unavailable, and any low-level characters are limited to level-20 (with various other gameplay restrictions).
  • A "F2P" or "Trial" account:
    • Any account created as a Starter Edition™ trial, and has never purchased (or otherwise acquired) any "gametime". All characters are limited to level-20, and are subjected even more gameplay restrictions then VET accounts.
(So a F2P can become Subbed, and a Subbed can become VET, and a VET can become Subbed again... but there's no way for a non-F2P to turn into a F2P.)

F2P characters are the only ones that "bank" experience... when a level-20 F2P mouses-over their Experience Bar, it displays how many "banked" levels would be automatically added if they were to purchase gametime (currently up to +10 or +11).

It sounds like you still have an active subscription for Legion (i.e., "Subbed"). If that's true... then you can:
  1. Make a level-20 character,
  2. "Twink it out" with all the best possible gear/enchants/consumables,
  3. Let your subscription expire,
  4. Play that same level-20 character as a VET account,
  5. Re-subscribe whenever you like, without having to worry about any banked XP accidentally-leveling characters.
...does that clear everything up? ;)

I didn't expect such a detailed reply. I don't have any Subscription active right now, however I had played some months during early Legion. Based on what you have said, I should be still safe to start the process by reaching the Level 20. I'll get the rest whenever I buy my next Subscription. Thank you again!

I have an old level 20 that has xp locked while unsubbed for whatever reason and can’t queue into bg’s. Will update with the results from a GM here in 24 hours or so.
