Official Tourney News! (yes, THAT tourney)

Chops

Soccer Dad
Hey guys, I wanted to drop in and give you an update on what we’re currently thinking in regards to the tournament. I think we’ve got enough stuff hammered out that I can give everyone a rough template on what to expect.

This isnt a final draft or anything, so if we change something in the future dont be coming back to this thread like “but but but you said…”

Prize: $1000 to first place. We’re working out second and third place. But it might be like, a 6 pack of pbr and a few moldy pop tarts, so dont get excited.

Date/time: It’s gonna be on a weekend in late Feb, probably the 23rd. Given the spread of time zones we have in this bracket it’ll likely be 6-midnight CT on a saturday night (thats sunday morning in australia)

This should give people PLENTY of time to build a toon, gear and practice while not having to rush during the holidays. It also gives you plenty of time to request off work, get out of school, whatever.

It also gives us a solid amount of time to figure out how broadcast this shit without a whole lot of hiccups, so people can actually watch it. Hey, on that note, if you're experienced with streaming, broadcasting, shout casting, etc... get the fuck at me. We need your talent and time.

Registration: We’re gonna open registration after the new year. Depending on response, we may choose to cap registration at like, 20 teams. If we do decide to put a cap in place, registration will be on a first come, first serve basis.

Composition rules: Limit 1 per class, one heal spec per comp. Outside of that, roll whatever comp you like. You must maintain your registered comp throughout the tournament. You can register an alternate player but the same comp must be maintained through the tourney.

Still havent decided on switching specs within the comp. We’ll probably allow it.

Gear rules: No grandfathered gear (Omarions, Tidal Charm, etc), no loss of control gear procs (green whelp, freezing bands) otherwise gear however you like. Be grateful I talked myself out of banning all proc gear, weapons included. Scepters are stupid. No weapon swapping on any class for any reason.

Tournament format: Gonna start with a round robin group stage and then move into a single elimination bracket (think world cup). If a high number of teams register, the group stage will serve to eliminate a bulk of the teams while also seeding the bracket. If a low number of teams register, then the group play will simply allow us to seed the bracket.

Dont worry, every “match” will be a best of three games and every team will get to play at least three matches in group play. So even in the very worst case scenario, youll play 6 games.

Should there be ties in group play (there will be) they’ll be broken by number of total games played (less is better) and failing that, total time on the field (again, less is better). Display dominance, get rewarded.

Finals will be best of 5.

Questions? Comments? Concerns? Lets go! This is a community tournament, lets get some community input. Im open to ideas. Convince me that you should be allowed to run resto druid/balance. Tell me why we shouldnt allow people to switch specs within their comp. Make your case for a double elimination bracket instead of group stage -> single elimination. Got a better tie breaker idea? Lets hear it.

oh sorry, the ps comment was not @ you. just a general comment that needed to be said

Assuming we can do some testing and make sure my computer can handle the spectator client and comms, I’d likely be interested in doing some casting.

Would like to get a bit of info on each player: time as a 39, max level rated xp, what they’re going to ride first at Disney if they win, etc. Just nice to have as a bit of filler for downtime on the stream and help people get to know the players a bit more.

Just some notes i think should be added/changed:

  • Legion Expansion must be activated in order to participate in the tournament. (Both arena teams need legion or higher so when the third party group (camraman/shoutcaster ect) ques against the arena teams that the ques will pop). Anything less and the ques will not work.
  • Any behavior that would be considered strange, mechanically manipulative, or non-objective oriented is not permitted and may result in a PENALTY.
  • Teams Must maintain communication with Admins for any changes pertaining their team's availability.
  • Teams are required to be online and ready to play at least an hour before the tournament starts.
  • The SIX first teams to sign up will be guaranteed a spot in this tournament. First come first served from teams signed up using the proper sign-up format listed below.
  • Every Team is required to present the battle tag of their nominated team captain.
  • Each serious (Per Team) your allowed to switch your comp once - if you d/c ingame you have to go again with same comp.
  • All games Best of 5, finals best of 7.
  • Double Elim Style
Format for signing up:

Team Name
Team Composition Number
Team Leader (Armory Links) (#BattleTag0000)
Team Member 2 (Armory Links)
Team Member 3 (Armory Links)
Team Member 3 (Armory Links)
(Each team member has to link all the characters they could possibly play to prevent another outside player joining in half way through the tournament)

  • I will add on this more in future after the patch comes out and theres any concerning changes that need to be addressed.

@Livingforce I like alot of this, especially the "legal" stuff (for lack of a better word).

Also, given our conversation, we will probably move to best of 5, finals best of 7.

I do have some questions/concerns I wanna iron out.

I cant tell if the sign up/composition format would allow for a team to register 4 players and endless characters? Not something I would like. I dont want the tournament to be decided by which team can field the biggest pool of comps. Im thinking something like "each team can register a maximum of 4 players and 4 characters. If a team wants to register 3 players and 4 characters, this is also allowed"

For example, a team sign up can look like:

Rise: RShaman
Sanit: Ret
Chops: Warrior/Druid

Or

Rise: RShaman
Sanit: Ret
Chops: Warrior
Drad: Druid

But its cant look like this:

Rise: Rsham/Priest
Sanit: Hunter/Pally
Chops: Warrior/Druid
Drad: Druid/Priest/Warrior

My main concern here is that I want the tournament to feel accessible to folks who are new to the bracket. I dont want people to feel like "hey, I wanna make 39s for this tourney but I dont want to level and gear 5 different classes so our team can build any comp at any time". I like the idea of limiting teams to 4-5 characters and either 3 or 4 players, depending on how the team wants to build.

Could you clarify the grandfathered gear rules a bit? Does it include pre-squish versions of items that have more stats (some Scholo/DM items, Bloodband Bracers, Chain Link Towel, satchel rings etc). Is legion invasion gear banned even though it has the same stats as greens? GFed helm/AP/SP enchants? Event gear like halloween rings?

Just banning GFed enchants and trinkets could probably cover most of the problematic stuff if you want to go for a simpler and easier to regulate rule.

A note about glitched enchants would be helpful too. They're pretty minor (except maybe when a PCB is involved) and mostly a workaround for a broken/inconsistent enchanting system, but it's fair to exclude them. Don't need to push them into a spot where people feel like they're required.

I don't know if I missed this I am kinda tired while reading but are the team sizes 5? or a full 10 with just 1 healer? also cant wait to watch the games if they are being streamed sounds sick.

3V3 arena bro

there can't be any good explanation for this ... so also no tradeglitched item or new races racials ?
Im not sure what youre objecting to but there are good reasons for all of it.

And OBVIOUSLY no tradeglitched gear but new races are just fine.

If you have the game you have legion afaik.

Basically you're saying : "Twinks, don't be twinks for this tournament. Let's play it Legion PvP style. Don't play it like you would normally have and please don't do those things (like weap swap) that can help you overcome or optimize certain situations. Don't use this item or that one, but some of them yes, but most no".
So it only becomes a class competition, and not a twink competition. And low levels are not really balanced, are they ?

People can't use loss of control items, can they use enhancing items, like jade pendants ?
Why are people allowed to play new races when not everyone can have them if they don't have the right expansion ?

Twinking is also commitment and days, sometimes even weeks or in the most extreme cases months of farming. Trying to find the right gear for the right situation, sometimes it's arenas, sometimes BG. It also means playing around certain abilities or items, defensively or offensively. Some people have been twinking for years, some for days. With this rule in place people may as well go in arenas naked carrying only weapons, it''s the same thing.
I remember years ago there was a 39 league going on in EU (i'm sure the thread can be found on old twinkinfo forums), and there was this Hunter (named Tolli ?) who had the 100% speed ground mount (back then mount speed depended on the mount not on the riding skill) and players were debating wether or not he was allowed to use it in arenas, after many posts everyone agreed he was allowed to use it, even though he was the only one to have it. Because that was the whole thing about twinking : twinks are not just a class, twinks are an optimized character.

That was my point.

But: after all, this is your tournament, you can decide how to manage it of course, and people are free to join or not. I just can't see this as a "twink" tournament with that rule in place.

I mean, Im not going to argue with you about how you define "twinking" but I will tell you that Im trying to run a tournament that attracts as many people as possible as both competitors and spectators. Tournaments are a solid recruiting tool and putting on an enjoyable tournament can do a lot for a brackets population and health.

There's nothing enjoyable, for competitor or audience, about just waiting on the first warrior to get 4 crusaders or exploiting an obvious glitch.

That said, Im open to being convinced to allow things like green whelp armor. Thats the whole reason we're bringing this forward early. Make the case.
