  • Due to the website drama, I have made a google doc for this guide. This google doc will be the "master" and will always have the latest changes. Please feel free to add comments/suggestions for any talents or errors. Google doc link
  • It looks like not all 2Hers are created equal. Use 2H swords/axes over a 2H mace/staff/polearm for a 1-2 damage increase. Make sure not to use caster versions of weapons (with int)
  • 7.3.5 changes scaling. Weapons no longer scale by rarity, only by type (1h/dagger/2h axe,sword/ranged). Dungeon blues are now ilvl 25. Lots of quest items are scaling to ilvl 25. It shouldn't be too hard to get ilvl 25 or better in every slot. AGM and many higher ilvl quest items are now GFd.
I need some help figuring out all the new gear, viable talents, and weapon rankings. If you see something missing or incorrect - please let me know! Heres a list of questions I’m looking to answer!
  • Viable Talent choices for lots of specs
  • Are windwalker monks limited to certain weapon types? Is there any reason to use 2 1hers over 1 2her?
19 Quick Start Gearing Guide [Legion]
Google Doc Master Copy (Always up-to-date)

With the release of legion, I've decided to retire my WoD Quick Start Guide and create a new guide for legion. This guide is intended to be for new twinks to easily find a set of gear to quickly be able to jump into BGs/arenas. It will also list the BiS items that might be harder to obtain, like Lucky Fishing Hat. It will NOT list grandfathered items - though I may include them in weapon damage rankings in the theorycrafting section.

Glossary:

Introduction

Theres a few things you should know before jumping in. Due to Principles of War, instanced pvp stats are almost exclusively based off your average equipped item level. This guide only covers instanced pvp (BGs and arenas). You need to equip an item in each slot in order for that item slot to count towards the template's stats. The base average equipped ilvl for this bracket is ilvl 24. Even if your ilvl is below 24, you will have the same stats as if you had an ilvl of exactly 24. Each ilvl above that increases your primary stats (armor/stam/int/agi/str) by .1%. Wearing all of your class's designated armor spec gives you a 5% bonus to your primary stat (int/agi/str).

The four laws of gearing a 19. Follow each law without breaking the previous ones.
  1. Don't leave any slots empty. Anything is preferable to empty (tabard and shirt don't count).
  2. Special Cases. If you can use wands, use a wand. Prefer shields over offhands. Rogues, Warriors, Hunters, Retribution/Protection Paladins and Enhance Shamans should use the correct category of weapon (1h/dagger/2h axe,sword/ranged). For example, an outlaw rogue shouldn't use a dagger.
  3. Use the proper armor type. For a 5% boost to primary stats, wear the right armor type. It is an all or nothing bonus. For example, warriors with all plate armor receive a 5% STR bonus. Cosmetic items like Mist-Piercing Goggles will break this bonus (but are fine for jewelry).
  4. Increase your average equipped ilvl as much as possible without breaking the first 3 rules. This is a very small 0.1% stat increase for each average equipped ilvl above the level 19 template (24). A very geared twink might reach ilvl 44 - so only a 2% increase.

Some other things to note:
  • Check your bank/bags for grandfathered gear, like your old Insiginia (60)! This list only contains items currently available to players.
  • Weapon attack speed is now normalized. Rarity does not matter. Make sure you use the proper category (1h, 2h axe/sword, daggers, ranged). Otherwise use the highest ilvl.
  • Moves that use offhand damage will actually use 50% of the mainhand damage. So you'll always want a high ilvl in your offhand. Don’t equip a lily instead of a dagger though - you’ll lose more in white damage than you gain in stats!
  • Some addons (like Deja's character stats) will show your character's average ilvl.
  • Enchants do not work in instanced pvp - with the possible exception of Black Magic.
  • Wands currently contribute twice as much stats as any other 1h weapon. Try a wand/lily combo and see your stats go up about 5%. See why in the theorycrafting section.
  • Dungeon rares and quests at 19 are now ilvl 25 blues for some slight upgrades. There is a drop in the 4 doable dungeons for basically every slot except trinkets and leather helm. So most slots should have at least an ilvl 25 option.
  • Items like Mist-Piercing Goggles do not have an armor type, so equipping them will remove the armor-type bonus. The fraction of a percent from increasing ilvl isn't worth losing the 5% primary stats.
  • Winning BGs will award Crate of Battlefield Goods which can drop green (ilvl 23) or blue (ilvl 27) weapons, offhand, shield, chest, legs, bracers, boots, and rings.
  • Completing random dungeons will award a satchel which can drop ilvl 25 gear.
  • Engineering is the only profession that unlocks additional gear (cloth goggles and trinket). Clothies will see the most benefit from engineering as they get both the goggles and the trinket upgrade. See this engineering leveling guide for a quick way to reach 150 (165 for gnomes).
  • Engineers (explosive sheep and other bombs, jumper cables for gnomes), Alchemists (Mixology), and Jewelcrafters (stone statues) provide some small advantages in terms of consumables. But the advantages are rather small - no primary profession is required.
  • First Aid should be leveled up on all twinks to allow the use of Runecloth Bandages (which are, surprisingly, better than Heavy Runecloth Bandages...). Go to dal and you can learn legion first aid (up to 800) and level it up with legion cloth.
World PvP:
I’m not going to go into wpvp gear due to how difficult of a task it is. I will instead leave you with some pointers so you can hopefully determine which of your gear is best for wpvp.
  • Obviously, ilvl doesn’t matter over stats - so lose your white rings, neck, and offhand.
  • The 5% for matching armor types doesn’t exist, so feel free to use other armor types if the item has better stats. Casters who wear plate/mail/leather should look at gear from all armor types they can wear. Hunters and Enhance Shamans will want to look at agility leather.
  • Mastery does nothing at lvl 19. Gear with mastery should be replaced.
  • Figure out if your class/spec prefers crit, haste, or versatility and focus gear and enchants on that.
  • Minor speed to boots is the only boot speed enchant that stacks with the WoD cloak enchants that provide speed.
  • Elemental Force, Crusader, and Landslide are all good weapon enchants depending on your class.
  • Legion neck enchants like Mark of the Hidden Satyr are very good.
  • Consider using an heirloom neck for the on-use potion or speed boost.
  • You can use trinkets for the stat boost, but don’t forget the equip effects.
  • Newer jewelry may not have a primary stat (agi/int/str) - consider finding old jewelry pieces that have that stat if it is higher priority than secondary stats.
  • Look at gear/enchants used in WoD, and then consider the new gear and enchants available in legion. Remember that WoD had scaling in BGs, so some of the best BG/arena items might not be the best when there is no scaling.

If you see any typos or broken links, please let me know. More importantly - if you disagree with certain gear choices or think I missed something, please post that as well, along with the reasoning behind that gear piece!

Druid
While all druids can carry the flag well with travel/cat/bear form, restoration remains the best flag carrier in the bracket. Feral has solid damage. Boomkin has strong dots and good burst. Guardian is pretty lackluster. Druids will always use the highest ilvl weapon combination possible as their attack speed and damage is based on their current form. On the fun side, grab Nature’s Beacon for some interesting teleportation options.

Hunter
Hunters remain highly mobile ranged characters with a furry friend...unless you decide to go survival to try out the high damage melee hunter...or decide to go lone wolf marksman and say goodbye to your furry friend. All 3 specs are viable - survival is the current FotM. Pet abilities are extremely limited at 19, as most pets get their abilities at 20. No slow/root abilities are available, so carrion birds are the best pet as they are the only pet with anti-healing. BMs can still tame exotic beasts, but the only notable one that I know of is the chimera, which has a channeled aoe and can be used to find stealthed enemies.

Mage
Mages are high utility classes with decent movement ability and good damage. I’m not sure how the specs stack up right now, but the gear is all the same. I imagine frost is good at controlling enemy movement (and has an elemental), fire can be good burst, but is RNG dependent, and arcane requires a bit of ramp up, but will be good damage.

Monk
I haven’t looked at monks in legion, but mistweaver seems to be healing decently from what I’ve seen. Brewmaster and windwalker probably will maintain the high damage they showed in WoD. Monk abilities do not use weapon damage - so the highest ilvl weapon(s) should be used regardless of category.

Paladin
I haven’t played paladin at all in legion, but hammer of justice is really strong since stuns are so rare at 19. Holy pallies can be very hard to take down. Ret pallies are solid damage. Prot has been traditionally really bad, and probably remains that way. Let me know if you’ve found otherwise.

Rogue
Rogue maintains its spot as a longtime twink favorite. Outlaw plays very similar to the SS strike rogue of old. Assassination and subtlety bring some interesting abilities back to the 19 bracket, but tend to be less reliable than outlaw. All specs offer an interrupt and lots of control with sap. The ilvl 100 masks are from pickpocketing draenor mobs. The guide has been lost, but basically you'll want to head to draenor with a high level friend to draw aggro to let you pickpocket.

Shaman
Shaman healers are still strong. Elemental is interesting, but seems very dependent on being left alone to cast. Enhance lacks stormstrike until lvl 20, but still can have surprising burst. Ghost wolf and earthbind totem work well for kiting and flag running. Wind shear is one of very few interrupts at 19.

Warlock
Warlock is in a pretty strong place due to high stamina in their pvp template. Affliction does quite well with plenty of DoTs, a nuke talent, and drain life. Destruction seems to be similar to the WoD glass cannon, however the stat templates prevent us from stacking crazy amounts of crit. Demonology looks to have gotten more than a little changed - I’m not sure how well its doing, but traditionally it has been the weakest of the 3.

Warrior
Warrior is still in a good place for pvp. Arms warrior have solid damage in addition to their anti-heal. Fury seems like it will be very bursty. Prot doesn’t look to be great damage, but the stun talents could be game changing in team play. A lack of slows may hold the warrior back from its former glory, but the burst may be needed to power through bubbles and heals.

Weapon Rankings:

Classes that use weapon damage (warriors, rogues, hunters, enhance shamans, ret/prot pallies) have an additional consideration above ilvl for their weapons - weapon damage. Weapon damage affects many skills directly, so we want to maximize this.

Currently, it appears that there are a few standard "template weapon stats" that are being used. Your weapon takes on the speed and damage of the appropriate weapon template. Every item within a category uses the same template. An epic weapon is going to be the same as a blue dungeon drop, heirloom, green, or even white. So the main thing is to equip the proper category of weapon (ex: outlaw rogues should use 1hers, not daggers). Be careful not to use an int-based weapon either, as caster weapons appear to have a lower template. Then maximize item level.

These are the current known categories

  • 1H Sword/Mace/Axe/Fist

  • Daggers

  • 2H Axes/Swords

  • 2H Maces/Polearms/Staves (less dmg than 2h swords/axes)

  • Ranged (guns/bows)
There are likely caster template categories for 1h, daggers, and staves/2h maces - however I haven’t tested to figure out exactly what these categories are. For now just avoid caster (int) weapons. You should be fine using a str weapon even if you use agi (or vice versa).

Follow these rules in order for choosing a weapon:

1. Choose the correct category for your class/spec (ex, outlaw rogues should use a 1h, not a dagger). Do not use a caster version of an item (so don't use the int BoA mace over the agi BoA mace.

2. Choose the highest ilvl item you have available (to increase your overall ilvl). This is a very minor stat increase.

A good place to start for any twink is the appropriate heirloom (24). Dungeons at 19 now drop ilvl 25 stuff, so thats a slight increase. And the BG box can drop ilvl 27 things, which are going to be BiS in most cases. Survival hunters may actually prefer an ilvl 25 axe/sword over the ilvl 27 polearm.

Weapon offhands should always be the highest ilvl available. Skills that use the offhand weapon for damage use 1/2 the damage of the main hand item (last I checked - if you have evidence otherwise, let me know).

Note that prior to 7.3, weapon speed was NOT normalized and rarity didn't matter. This made certain slow weapons very strong. There was also rarity scaling for a short time. This is no longer the case. If you see some part of this guide referring to slow weapons or rare weapons, let me know as I missed it when updating.

Wands:

So all over the guide I recommend to use wands over any other 1H if possible. Doing a quick test in a BG shows that using a wand provides a decent chunk of stats over a higher lvl 1h. That should be more than enough reason to use one...but why is it happening?

It appears as if wands are treated as 2h weapons. There are 14 armor slots and 2 weapons slots for each class. So the template gives you 1/16 of your template's stats for each slot where you have an item equipped. Some classes only use a single weapon (staff, 2Hers, ranged, etc) - so that weapon provides 2/16 worth of stats. It looks like wands are counting as a 2h weapon, meaning that when you equip an offhand as well, you're actually getting 3 slots worth out of your weapons. So any class that uses a wand is actually getting 17/16 worth of stats, which works out to be a 6.25% bonus.

Note that this is just an assumption based on the data. I'm not 100% sure this is the reason, but its by far the best explanation I've found.

Any wand + Lily combo will be better than a mace/sword/dagger or staff. I don’t know if wands drop from BG crates, but there are a few ilvl 25 wands available from dungeons and questing. Deadmines has Cookie's Stirring Stick from a quest and Cookie's Stirring Rod as a drop. Firebelcher is from a rare spawn in Wailing Caverns. Skycaller is a world drop, so has a rare chance to drop in dungeons and scale to level 19. Horde seems to have a few blue wands available as quest rewards as well.

Breakpoints:

These are just some observations I’ve done on how increasing ilvl works using deja’s char stats to see the data. Its also old (from early legion) - so the templates are definitely out of date, but the logic still applies AFAIK.

  • My ambush tooltip damage only increases when agility gets to a new whole number. It increased by 3 damage when agility when up by one. If it was using decimals, it would have gone up by 1 three times as the ilvl went up.

This points to there being breakpoints in terms of what stats you can get to. Increasing your ilvl to ~37 to get to 113 agility on a rogue means a small damage increase. Getting to ilvl 38 does nothing for your damage. Neither does 39, 40, 41, etc until you reach the next breakpoint (~46?).

To verify this - try looking at your health in a BG/arena with ~ilvl 24 gear. Increase your ilvl until your char sheet shows your stam going up by 1. If this assumption is correct, your health will not increase until your stam actually goes up, and then it will jump up by 1 stam's worth of health.

  • When changing a lower ilvl piece for a higher ilvl piece of gear, your stats can go up even if your ilvl does not go up. I replaced an ilvl 24 piece of gear with an ilvl 27 piece of gear, but my average ilvl stayed at 39. Despite this, my stamina went up by 1.

This points to ilvl not being a whole number. So your true ilvl might be 39.76. Since we increase stats by .1% per ilvl above 24, that means our stats go up by (39.76-24)*.1%, which means our stats go up by 1.576% - which might be enough to hit the next stat breakpoint.

I'd be interested to see if there is a macro or addon that will give equipped ilvl as a decimal. The only macro I've seen doesn't handle invasion gear well (counts it as 700+ or w/e), but it did do decimals.

In conclusion, breakpoints DO exist. But they are on the stat side of things - not on the ilvl side of things.

Example breakpoint data - Assassination Rogue

Ilvl - armor/agi/stam

24 - 77/112/176

26 - 77/112/177

31 - 78/112/177

33 - 78/112/178

37 - 78/113/178

39.x - 78/113/179

44.x - 79/113/179

*46 - ?/114/180

*56 - 80/?/?

This doesn’t mean much for most people. Just use the highest ilvl stuff you can. The only time when this matters (besides SWAG) is survival hunters choosing between an ilvl 27 polearm and an ilvl 25 axe. If equipping the polearm gets you to a breakpoint, then it may be better. Otherwise use the axe. Either way - go into a BG and try both and look at the tooltip damage.

30 Second 19 Twink Guide

It’s pretty easy to make and gear up a 19 twink these days. For more detailed gear, look at the individual class section. This only applies to instanced pvp.
  1. Create a character, heirloom up, level to 19, and turn xp off.
    • Save quests that have blue rewards until level 19 to turn in - these will be ilvl 25 at 19 and may be good for wpvp.
  2. Grab heirloom trinkets and the white neck/rings/offhand/cloth legs as needed.
  3. Spam random dungeons to get ilvl 25 gear for every slot (except trinkets)
    • Switch to targeted dungeons when some dungeons drop nothing for you.
    • There are no leather helms - use an heirloom.
    • Make sure to grab a weapon from the right category if applicable. See the individual class/spec guides for details.
  4. Congrats, you’ve got a basic set that is ~98% as good as full BiS gear. Start doing BGs and hope you get lucky with ilvl 27 gear. The rest is optional, and quite frankly - a lot of work for relatively little stat gain.
  5. Rogues can farm for a Griftah mask (100)
  6. Pick up fishing and participate in the STV fishing contest for the trinkets (65) and cloth helm (40).
  7. Consider picking up engineering for the trinkets (28) and cloth helm (30) until you get the fishing gear.

Weapons
  • Use a Wand if your class can wield wands
  • Use a Shield instead of an offhand for holy pallies and ele/resto shamans
  • Physical damage classes/specs should never use a caster weapon (with int), but can use either str or agi, even if their class doesn’t use it
  • Monk/Druids don’t use weapon damage, so should use highest ilvl combination
  • Physical damage class/specs should use a 1H instead of a dagger unless you are a subtlety/assassination rogue
  • 2H Axes/Swords do more damage than 2H Maces/Polearms/Staves at 19
  • Survival hunters should use a 2H axe/sword unless a high ilvl staff/polearm gets you to an agility breakpoint
Wands: Dungeon/Quest Blue (25)
Shields: Blue Crate Shield (27) > Dungeon/Quest Blue (25) > Heirloom (24)

What about white items filled in neck/finger/off-hand slots?
It was said to not provide increase ilvl in Legion. Could you clarify this statement?

Only made my twink for the first time I think on the 28th? So yeah don't really know what's going on so this is super helpful, thanks.

Also, are the Minor Recombobulators really worth losing the 14 stamina from heirloom trinkets?

hi friend ;d
stats from items within instance bg are of no matter anymore ;o
all require for bg now as new character who has not been able invasion is fill all slots with main armor type, white, green, purple it not matter any longer only that all slots filled and filled with main armor type because stat templates within instance (arena/bg) pvp.

world pvp and duels still stat on gear mattering but in instanced pvp best gear is highest ilvl.

invasion gear is good, bg crate is good, but not required and not completely game breaking different, the difference is very small ;o

There was a rumor that white gear would no longer work, however that hasn't happened yet with legion's release. It may yet happen in a future patch, but for now those items are still good.

As Farnk said, in instanced pvp, we are getting NO stats from what it says on our gear. A white chest with ilvl 24 is the same thing as the heirloom chest. So you can basically ignore anything except for the ilvl and armor type for most gear.

The Minor Recombobulators are only going to be a little be more in the way of ilvls though - and might not gain you any stats. Its up to you if the engineering is worth it. You can certainly use the heirloom trinkets and do just fine.

225 engineering still requires 20lvl so at 19lvl 150 is max available (checked).

Yup. 150 is the max at 19. Maybe 165 if gnomes still get a bonus, but theres no gear that becomes available with 165. 125 is for the trinkets and 150 is for the green tinted goggles. Thats three pieces of gear for new clothies who haven't started fishing yet.

Also don't know yet if the fishing tourney is actually back. It may still be on hiatus.
